“We’re working on a way to get you back. I’ll be popping in and out to check on you – until then, I suggest you sit tight.”
“Sit tight? Easy for you to say! What am I supposed to do? I don’t know anything about this woman! What’s my job now, if I even have one? Am I married? Do I have kids? I – “
Dr. Kim calmly interrupted her. “According to our data, Jocelyn is a hairdresser. She has a boyfriend but was never married. I don’t remember all of the information right now, but I can go back and get any other data we have if you need it. Don’t worry about that.”
“OK,” Sarah responded, “but how can I even pass myself off as this person? It’s not as if I’m just inhabiting her body – I still have my own head. I can’t just walk into her job and act like nothing’s different! Hell, people probably aren’t even going to tell that I’m supposed to be this Jocelyn person, they’ll just think I’m some random stranger.”
“I wish I could help you there,” said her friend, “but I’m afraid I don’t have any answers for that. Considering that the reality you’re currently in ‘thinks’ of you as Jocelyn, it’s possible that people will just accept you as her. But we don’t know that for sure. We won’t know the truth of that hypothesis until it’s been tested.” Suddenly Dr. Kim looked over her shoulder. “I-I-I’m sorry, I have to go now. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
“What? Wait!” Cried Sarah.
“I’ll be back to check on you tonight!” said Kim. “That’s ‘tonight’ in your time! About twelve hours from now for you!” Her hologram begin to sputter and fade like a TV program being interrupted by static. “Until then, I suggest you try to act normally! Good luck!”
“Twelve hours? But what if I need you before then? Hey, come back!”
But it was too late. Kim was gone, leaving Sarah all alone again in a strange room and a strange life.
“Well, some help that was,” she mumbled to herself. “She said I’m supposed to be a hairdresser, but she didn’t even say where.”
