This choice: Beginning 4, reader's choice. • Go Back... It was a blustery, rainy Tuesday morning when Jade got into work. The bus had broken down halfway to town and so she had had to make the rest of the journey on foot, and quick enough to avoid being late. But despite her damp, wind swept hair, she was in a contented mood. She always wore her hair like it was styled for Halloween anyway, so if anything the wind had added to that effect.
Bursting her way into the toilets, Jade passed Nicola on her way out. The two shared a smile and a brief greeting, then Jade walked over to the mirror, staring at her reflection. It was her usual reflection, intentionally unkempt hair, several piercings in her face and a heavy coat of make-up, particularly mascara. She chewed on her lower lip for a while, then dug into her bag and produced a little doll. http://i.imgur.com/mUiwTGT.jpg
It was a 'Yarn Doll', left to her by her late grandmother, along with a hand written letter that explained how 'special' the doll was. Whoever held the doll had the ability to exchange people's bodies or individual body parts. Only the people who had touched the doll would notice the swaps, everyone else would have their perception of reality altered. At least... that was what her grandmother had told her in the letter.
Jade held the doll in one of her hands, adorned with black nail polish, and she rubbed it's face with her thumb. She knew she could have tested the doll out on the way to work, but with the bus breaking down, she hadn't really had time to waste.
But now she was at work...
Her concentration was broken when the door to the toilets opened. Jade shoved the doll back into her bag and turned to see who ths 'intruder' was. She was relieved to see that it was Suki, the other new girl besides herself. "Heya!" Suki smiled, waving at Jade in her usual chirpy tone.
"Hey." Jade muttered, in a monotone voice. Jade had to admit, she and Suki were at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of personality and appearance. But they were both new to Wilkos, so they had quickly become friends.
"Something wrong?" Suki asked, her smile diminishing slightly, but not significantly.
Jade shook her head. "No, everything's fine. apart from me being soaked." she said, removing her damp jacket. She then made a few minor alterations to her wet hair, but decided to let it dry on it's own rather than use the hand dryer. As Suki disappeared into a cubicle to relieve herself, Jade glanced at her bag again, carefully pondering her next move. Should she try the doll out on her own? Or bring Suki in on this?
Fuck it! Jade eventually thought, waiting for Suki to come out of the cubicle. Then she practically shoved the Yarn Doll into Suki's face. "Look at this!"
Suki frowned, stepping back a little so she could get a clearer look. "Very pretty. Did you make it?" she inquired of Jade.
"No. My grandmother left it to me." she said, pulling her arm back in and studying the doll again.
"Aww, that's sweet." Suki murmured.
"But that's not all..." Jade continued, before describing the supposed powers of the doll, and the fact that only the people actually touching the doll at the time would notice the changes. Of course Suki was highly skeptical. "There's only one way to find out." Jade smirked.
And that was to test it out on one or more of their co-workers.
