The scared young man braced the device against the base of the car's driver-side window, taking aim. Just shoot and get the hell out of here, he told himself.
The redheaded young woman walking down the courthouse steps was clearly the same one from his reference photo. She even had the same outfit on.
The device let off a dull noise, much quieter than expected, as he pulled the trigger.
Athena Cykes was laughing as she made her way down the front steps outside the courthouse. She and her co-workers had just completed a successful defence of their latest client. Trucy Wright, wearing her usual pale blue magician's outfit, had just been making a witty comment about the trial's proceedings. Right at that moment, unnoticed by them or their remaining co-workers, a noise rang out from an otherwise inconspicuous car parked near their location.
"Ack-!!"
Trucy looked over in surprise. Athena's laughter had been cut off as she gave a startled grunt.
At her feet, something clattered to the ground. "What's...?" she began to say as she looked downward. "A-Athena-!!"
Athena had suddenly doubled over, clutching a spot on her upper leg. Trucy made to take hold of her shoulder and support her, Apollo joining from the other side to help.
It was their turn to yell in surprise as some kind of unseen force shoved them away from their friend.
None of the group noticed the car in the parking lot making a hasty exit.
The same strange force that pushed them all away sent the object Trucy had been looking down at clattering down the courthouse steps. It looked to be a half-sphere of some kind, with several noticeable sharp points on its flat side. Trucy was just steadying herself, still looking at the strange object, when another burst of invisible force erupted from Athena's position. Trucy gave a startled scream before her vision blacked out.
And then everything was back. Trucy, still in a panic, scrambled to her feet at the bottom of the stairway. Something was very wrong, and she needed to see what it was.
She didn't need to look for long. Almost instantly, her attention was drawn to the impossible sight directly before her.
It was a single foot. Somebody's foot, bigger than any of the cars lining the parking lot. Trucy looked upward in disbelief.
