"I just feel bad that I haven't been able to help with rent."
"Girl, we've been over this before. You're fine. I know you are out there looking for a job. It's a tough market out there and I've got you covered until then! Seriously, Rylie, you're my friend and it's the least I can do."
Rylie, a small, ginger-haired under-graduate with black-rimmed glasses sighed, "I know... Thanks Sarah. It's just it's been three months and I still don't have a job. I guess I feel like I've been kind of useless around here."
Sarah paused to briefly check something on her phone.
Rylie's roommate, Sarah, was a tall, attractive blonde she'd become friends with in college. As much as they were opposites in many ways, including the area of physical beauty and social status, they'd managed to really hit it off. Sarah was drawn to Rylie's kind-hearted nature and Rylie always appreciated that Sarah was so much more outgoing and since Rylie was pretty shy.
Rylie took a sip of her coffee and a mouthful of her cereal before looking back up at Sarah who was sitting across from her at the table.
Sarah looked up and brushed off Rylie's comment, "Now that's not true! You've been anything but useless. You always help me keep the apartment clean. You always listen to me when I rant about pointless drama in my life." Sarah paused and laughed, "And no one really puts up with my stupid drama but you. You just need a little extra confidence. That's all!" She pointed down at her cell, "Here I've got a friend that works over at Tony's Pizza; I just let him know you're going to drop by today and I encouraged him to give you an interview."
Rylie's ears perked to attention. "Really?"
Sarah grinned, "Yes really. I think you'd be a shoe in."
Finally Rylie cracked a smile. "Ok, I'll do it. None of my other leads have called me back anyways."
"That's my girl!" Sarah leapt up enthusiastically to give Rylie a high-five. Rylie returned the five and then just smiled and shook her head, "You're silly sometimes, Sarah!"
About an hour later, Rylie was dressed in a classy, interview outfit consisting of a slim, black skirt and a soft-blue blouse. As she was walking out the door, she turned and yelled back into the apartment, "I'm heading out to Tony's pizza! Thanks again for the referral!"
"Your welcome!"
The door shut behind Rylie and she briskly went down the stairs and exited out onto Allen Street. She was thankful the restaurant wasn't far and she could walk without having to call a cab. She melted easily into the bustling crowds walking up and down the streets of New York, her small size and average looks making her almost invisible to most of the other busy denizens. Rylie was used to being in the background of most social settings; her shy nature meant she wasn't a fan of being the center of attention anyway.
Just as she was walking past, Rylie suddenly felt herself being grabbed and pulled into a narrow alley off the side of Allen Street. She tried to scream but a hand quickly clamped over her mouth. She tried to turn her neck but before she could see who grabbed her, she felt a sharp pain crack against the back of her skull and then everything went black.
