Chapter #4

Onward, to the Donut Shop!

"I can't believe we lost." Piper pouted, kicking a rock down the sidewalk and into oncoming traffic

"Piper, there were like sixty entrants." Zack said flatly from beside Dakota, "The odds of us winning anything weren't exactly in our favor; if you don't want it, I'll—"

Zack's suggestion was met with a swift punch in the shoulder, Piper using her long olive arm to reach past Dakota's svelte shape while still clinging tightly onto their second place prize; a gift card to this place called D's Donuts. It must have been some local place, because Dakota had never heard of it. The card was brightly colored, pink and white specifically, and had a simple graphic of a donut with a 'D' in the hole.

"No way, you little turd." Piper said harshly, "I never win jack! I'm keeping hold of this..."

As Zack rubbed his aching shoulder, the three teens came into view of the eponymous donut shop. It was a more or less unimpressive building, built right between two businesses of rather unimportant purpose. Moreover, Dakota was surprised that they hadn't seen this place coming a mile away. It was a two-story building that was white with pink trim (thus explaining the color scheme on the card, she supposed). In the window was a bright neon sign that read "D's DONUTS" in burning red curly-cue cursive.

"This the place?" Dakota turned to ask, "I mean, I'd be more surprised if this weren't the place, but..."

Piper rolled her eyes and muttered something about Texans being dumb as she pressed against the glass door, a small bell above their heads signalling the three teens' entry. There was already a modest crowd inside (a young couple a bit older than Piper, a mom and her two chubby kids, and a man all by his lonesome), and a sizeable young woman working behind the counter.

"Welcome to D's Donuts!" she said, eyeing all three of them as soon as she heard the bell, "My name's Madi—let me know if you guys need anything!"

"Yeah, thanks." Piper said dismissively as she sauntered towards the counter, "Hey, listen, we were just given this gift card..."

"Oh wow, really?" Madi looked shocked, her double chin creased as her mouth hung open, "They haven't even let us know that anybody won yet... you must really like donuts to rush over here so quickly!"

"Yeah." Piper answered flatly, "Look, is there any way we could exchange this for money or... are we stuck with it?"

"I'm afraid that all D's Donuts gift cards are non-refundable..." Madi said with a small, apologetic smile that dimpled her chubby cheeks, "So yeah, looks like you're stuck with it. Sorry."

Piper let out a low sigh

"It's cool." she finally said, much to the relief of onlooking Zack and Dakota, who were about ninety percent sure that she was going to cause a scene, "I guess we'll just be eating out here a lot then."

"You say that like it's a bad thing." Zack said as he stared one of the many display cases, "I love donuts!"

"Yeah because you're both empty where it counts." Piper rolled her eyes, "I guess we'll just take a dozen then."

Madi ushered the three teens over to the various display cases. There were donuts of all kinds sitting on perfectly pristine white plates under bright lighting. Creme-filled, jelly-filled, there were donuts dusted with powdered sugar, donuts both glazed and frosted, they had krullers, bear claws, holes and even churros! After much deliberation, everyone agreed on a grab-bag sort of approach where they recieved twelve different flavors.

"And your free 13th to make it a baker's dozen; on the house for our big winners." Madi said triumphantly as she bent down and plucked an apple-filled from the case and plopped it on top, "That'll be ten fifty."

Piper swiped her card as Zack grabbed the box, and ushered her friends to a table...
