Chapter #4

Unexpected Dinner, Unexpected Offer

by: Dr. Faustus Author IconMail Icon
The girl Dakota saw getting out of the car was huge. That is to say, they were about the same size height-wise and she probably did not weigh much more than the mentioned 350 pounds, but Jubilee Revire seemed nearly spherical in shape, with a colossal round gut that jiggled with every step, wobbly thighs that forced her to waddle, large round breasts swaying to and fro. Even her face, framed with short blonde bangs, was round and full, complete with a collection of chins.

“She's been on a diet, huh?” Zack whispered to Piper but she ignored him.

“Hi, Jubilee!”

“Hello, Piper! Hi, guys! And you're Dakota, right? Glad to see you.”

“Me, too,” Dakota nodded uncertainly, only to be smothered in a soft, enveloping embrace.

“So glad! Well, won't we sit down?” and Jubilee pointed to a bench nearby.

When they sat down, she passed around the bag. “I brought some cupcakes to tide us over but mainly,” she made a meaningful pause, snatching two, “but mainly I'd like to invite you to our restaurant.”

“Yeah? Really?” From Piper's tone of voice this was not a common thing.

“Yeah, really. Let's enjoy the sea for a while and I'll take you there afterwards.”

“Good idea,” approved Zack, wolfing down cupcakes. Dakota reached for one, too, not to feel left out.

“Uff, that was a workout!” Jubilee was a remarkably good walker, given her weight, but the stroll along the pier tired her out. She plopped down in the nearest empty booth and offered, “Order whatever you like, it's on the house!”

Zack picked strawberry waffles and coke, Piper went overboard, asking for a bacon burger, chocolate chip pancakes and a milkshake. Dakota hesitantly looked around, “I'll have just an iced tea, please?”

“No, no, no. Look, girl, you need to taste the finest cuisine of Daven's Port. Bring her our Mega Burger,” Jubilee ordered a plump waitress. “So, what's new?” she turned to Piper.

The three old friends went on chatting while Dakota had very little to contribute. To cover her hesitation, she bit into the megaburger. It was good, very good indeed, but not exactly the healthiest choice on an already unhealthy menu. If it were up to her, she would have picked something significantly less calorific.

And it was BIG. Midway through, Dakota was starting to feel stuffed. But she chowed on, it was better than sitting there and silently watching the conversation (and possibly offending their hostess). After a long while, when topics like fashion, work or former schoolmates have been thoroughly exhausted, Piper turned to their generous friend, “And what about your diet, how it goes?”

Jubilee's cheeks turned pink, “You can see yourself, Pipes. Dieting's not easy when you're working at a restaurant. Which reminds me, have you ever thought about waitressing? Any of you?”

“Why do you ask, Juby?”

“Well, see, we've just signed an affiliation with Yeng,” she smiled a little smugly.

Dakota couldn't care less but her two local friends gasped. “Really? Congrats!” - “So this is what we're celebrating today?”

“Well, yes and no.” Jubilee uncomfortably shuffled around in her chair, “See, one of their conditions was that we expand our business. Enlarge the kitchen, add more tables, longer opening hours… Parents will be opening – and running – another restaurant in the centre. And since there's going to be a lot more paperwork as well, I decided to use this opportunity to make myself a manager. If I distance myself from food, I might be finally able to slim down. Anyway, all that means more waiters. Known, reliable ones. That's where you come in. So, would any of you be interested? At least for the summer, to start with? This includes you too, Dakota. The more the merrier.”

“What would we need to do?” Piper seemed very interested in the offer.

“Well, it's standard waitressing. You'd start part-time, I suppose you'd prefer that anyway but if you like it, we may later employ you full-time. The starting wage is not much but it's still more than at any other restaurant I know. And you'll get a raise as soon as you're properly trained. Oh, and you'd obviously get employee discounts, too, from day one. They're worth it, trust me,” she rubbed her belly. “So, are you in?”

You have the following choices:

1. Sounds good, all three friends agree

*Noteb*
2. Dakota is worried about her weight

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
