It was a slow day at the police station, which was fine for most. A lazy day for a cop usually means a safe day for the community so long as everything was going okay. Detective Gumshoe was enjoying his lazy day at his tiny cubicle when the mail-room guy came through with a cart of parcels and boxes.
"Package for you detective," he said, interrupting Gumshoes' game of computer solitaire.
"Eh? From who?" he asked, not sure what it could be. He didn't have the cash to order anything at the moment, and he doubted anyone would send him a gift at his work address.
"Doesn't say, but it apparently passed security clearance. Maybe you have a secret admirer?" the man suggested with a laugh as he tossed the box on Gumshoe's desk and wheeled the cart away.
Gumshoe couldn't help but smile at the idea. "Let's see what we have then!" He said excitedly as he began to pull the box apart, finding a small remote and a set of instructions accompanying it.
---
After reading the instructions, Gumshoe was a bit glum. He was sure that someone was just playing a mean joke on him; there was no way such a device could be real at all. He idly wondered who would send it to him though, it was an oddly specific joke. He couldn't recall doing anything to make anyone want to send him a phony body swapping machine.
It wasn't like Gumshoe had anything better to do than try it, though. He was bored and there wasn't much crime going on. If it worked, then his day would become much more exciting, and if it didn't then he managed to kill a couple of hours. The way he saw it, there were three places he could test it. The first was the prosecutor's office, which was a stones throw away; if it worked then he'd certainly want Mr. Edgeworth to know. Gumshoe would be really useful on investigations with something like that. The second person who came to mind was Maggey; the two of them were close, so he figured she wouldn't mock him just for testing it out. Finally, the cell blocks for the prisoners were also pretty close, and Gumshoe had access to most of them. He knew that most of the people Mr. Edgeworth and Wright put away were pretty rotten fellows. He figured it wouldn't really be a big deal to use them as guinea pigs since most of them were murderers of some kind.
