"I don't know, Ill think of something" I said, shrugging my shoulders. Runt hopped down of the counter to have a peek through the crack in the door.
"Well before we do anything, we gotta catch them first"
"What do you mean by catch?" i asked, raising an eyebrow in confusion. "I don't think Ill be running after them anytime soon"
"Catch, subdue, overpower... whatever" explained Runt, waiving his hand dismissively. "Look, I have to touch them in order to do anything. Just distract them long enough so I can get close okay"
"I thought anyone near you was instantly attracted to you?" I replied, brow furrowing as I poured the coffee from the pot into two mugs.
"It doesn't work on everyone, especially hunters, mental resistance or shit like that." he replied, ducking away from the door incase they turned round. "Normal people, pretty easy. Hunters, other demons, supernaturals... not so much".
"Right... I hope you know what your doing" I said, accepting the somewhat bizarre reasoning. I picked up the mugs and made my way back into the living room, Runt dissolving from view as I heard his steps patter out the door, then on to the ceiling.
"Sorry it took so long, shitty coffee pot" I said, praying they didn't see through me. I placed the coffee on the table. Sean picked up the mug, but then paused, sniffing it, as if he expected me to drug it or something, which was unnerving as I was considering that idea back in the kitchen.
"Thanks" he said, before taking a sip. There was an awkward silence for a moment.
"Soooo... you find anything... strange yet?" i said, trying my best attempt at conversation.
"Ummm... nothing yet really" said Dan, the thing in his hand, which looked like some sort of glass crystal on a chain necklace, had returned to a dim glow. Dan placed the chain round his neck, tucking it into his shirt collar.
"Sooo... you paranormal investigators or something like that?" I said, trying my best to act casual. Where the fuck was Runt?
"Something like that" replied Sean, putting down his mug. "But looks like we got a false alarm today. You sure you haven't seen anything strange?" he said, his eyes piercing. He knew I knew something, he was just testing me.
"No, might get a few bumps in the night... but nothing majorly out of the ordinary"
"Well something was definitely here" said Dan, walking over and picking up the other mug. I felt tense. Sean was putting on a friendly face, but I felt him scanning me, waiting for me to make a move.
Another pause, before he picked up his mug again to take a sip.
"So..." he began. "Your lived here long?"
"About a year or so" I replied. "Put on bit of weight over the while I guess" I said with a chuckle.
I knew they were suspicious about my newly gained fat, but had no way of asking about it without coming across as rude or weird.
"Yeah, New York can do that to you" shrugged Dan.
"I don't know..." added Sean, sceptical. "Living in NY can be expensive, most people in this area find it difficult just to put food on the table"
"Excuse me" I said raising an eyebrow as I decided to play the offended party. I folded my arms. "What do you mean by that?"
"Oh uhhh... Sean didn't mean to offend you of course" interjected Dan with nervous laughter, elbowing his older brother in the ribs. Sean gave a slight scowl. He saw what I was doing, and he didn't like it.
"Your'e right, I apologise If I have.... upset you" said Sean, with veiled annoyance.
There was a brief awkward silence, which left me wondering where the hell Runt was.
"So, you guys find any paranormal stuff yet?" I said, changing the topic.
"Not yet, we're not having so much luck so far" said Dan, looking around the apartment sheepishly. Sean wasn't so easy to give up, he furrowed his brow in determination.
"You sure you haven't seen or heard anything else? Anything at all?"
"No" I replied, meeting his stare. "Nothing at all"
I could tell my deniability was pushing Sean's patience.
"I see" growled Sean as he reached into his jacket. I froze, not sure what to do. Suddenly, both men went vacant, their arms dropping to their sides, eyes wide open staring into space. Runt materialised behind them, his hands on the backs of there necks.
"Nicely done!" he said laughing, before withdrawing his hands. "You really made blondie here boil"
"Took you long enough!" I snapped in response.
"Hey i had to be careful, If they'd spotted me I'd be dead"
"I'm sure you'd have managed"
Runt then reached into Sean and Dan's jackets and pulled out a pair of 9mm pistol. They were almost a white silver with a polished wooden grip. Strange tiny glowing carvings adorned the grip and barrel.
"They had guns!" I blurted out.
"Relax, these have silver cased bullets, just for monster killing...hate the things" He said, tossing the pistols away. "Besides, I'm sure they'd have only used them to... convince you to talk"
"Oh in that case it's fine" I retorted sarcastically. I turned my attention back to the two hunters. Sean's eye occasionally twitched. "They safe like that?"
"For now yeah" explained the imp. "I've... commendeered their bodies. I'm using my consciousness to override theirs, never done it to two people at the same time before though"
"You mean your'e controlling them?"
"No not exactly...". Runt winced as Sean suddenly jerked his head a little. "Look hate to rush you but blondie's putting up one hell of a fight, could you hurry up and make a wish"
"Right, sorry"
My mind raced as for what to do with them.
