"Has Shasta been following the diet plan we set up during our last visit?" The vet asked in a flat tone as he stared at me, unblinking, over top of his glasses. The middle aged, salt and pepper haired doctor had watched as I had casually strolled into the examining room with Shasta in tow. The four year old, black furred Shepherdess was energetic and happy as she wagged her tail and wriggled about, looking up at me with her soft brown eyes. I gulped nervously as I adjusted her bright pink bandanna across her thick neck, centering the triangle of fabric against her chest*
"Heh Heh...Of course!" I laughed nervously as I slowly knelt down and wrapped my arms around her waist. Her well-rounded, soft, and pudgy pot belly pressing against my arms as I strained to heave her up off the floor and lift her onto the examining table. I felt her tremendous bulk and heft against my body as I slowly stood back from the table. "She gets a quarter cup of food twice a day!" I said as I stood there, catching my breath as I stepped closer, stroking Shasta's big ears*
"And she get's no table scraps or extra treats?" The vet asked with a hint of skepticism as he poked and prodded at the Shepherdess' broad back, thick haunches, and her prominent bloated pot belly. He was no doubt scanning her last annual check up on his clip board, looking for faults in my answers"
"I think she's put on a bit of weight over the winter." He said matter-of-factually as he tapped his pen on the clipboard. "Her weight-in last year was 65lbs and now she's tipping the scales at 175lbs!" He said with a frown as he stared at me unblinking.
"She needs a drastic change in her diet right now!" He said as wrote furiously atop this clipboard, ignoring me as he continued to scribble.
