However bad her brothers and sisters in arms were, Moonbounce was certain of one thing – she would not fall short of the standard set by her peers. Being part of the Guard was what she had been bred to be. Besides, as so often before, all the thrill of the day combined with the missed lunch had left her starving.

Hopping off her bed, she wandered into the general direction of where she surmised the kitchens to be. Moonbounce had no clue how eager the chefs would be to serve an errant guard (much less a thestral) to an untimely snack, but if the worst came to worst she could always practice her sneaking skills on them.

The mare didn’t need to travel far until a promising scent made her nostrils tingle. Heading towards the smell lead her to a pair of large doors, one of which had the word “kitchen” burned into the woodwork. Her sharp ears could detect faint noises emanating from the other side: indistinct speech and bubbling noises. Should she walk in, perhaps interrupt something, or return back with an empty belly?
