"Hi Big sis, could you help me with my math homework? Mom said you could help me" Lily greeted Megan knowing that the sooner she asked for a favor the better her chances were, or else she would be locked up in her room and ignore her when she knocked on her door.
"Sorry Lily, today I'm busy" Megan took off her shoes and looked ready to bolt to her room, much to Lily's dismay. She really needed the help!
"What? Please help me, I need the help"
"I will try to help you later, alright?" Megan said with a tone that made it clear to Lily that she wasn't a priority, again. She wasn't even clingy to her big sister, yet she found herself treated with more and more disdain lately. It sucked. It was better before, she didn't understand what happened for things to go like this.
"Could you just help me now? Mom will ask and get mad at you!" Lily insisted playing her last card, she didn't want to threat Megan but she really needed the help. However, all she got was Megan getting closer to her and looking down with an angry look.
"Don't ever threaten me with mom like that, is that clear?"
"Sorry but-"
"I said later, now stop bothering me" Megan ruffled her little sister's hair a bit harshly and left to her room while Lily just sighed after another failed interaction.
Megan tried to remember to help her sister later, she wasn't actually mad at her but today it wasn't the day to be bothered, today she got herself a new spellbook. She shook her head wondering how Lily thought threatening with her mother getting mad was a good idea, they were already on bad terms since she started getting into this little hobby.
She put her bag on the floor and took off the book, this one gave her good sensations because it wasn't pretending to be some arcane tome no, this one was a normal book with a purple cover that promised to teach the reader several spells to start mastering the art of witchcraft. It was professional, unlike the other cool looking but phony pieces of crap she wasted her allowance on. A part of her knew this one could disappoint her too, but she needed to persevere, to keep going. School was so boring, the world was so boring, her family she loved but was so boring.. there had to be something more out there, something like magic, like the dark arts she kept reading on tales and kept unsuccessfully searching for proof in real life.
It was no time to help with stupid math, it was time to focus. Like a modern book this one had an index where she could see the different spells she could apply, which one should she try first? There was one to minimize her imperfections which sounded good enough, another to address your most immediate concern that sounded mysterious, a really cool looking one about bending reality to your will but that came with a warning and finally one that promised aligning your soul to achieve better understanding of what was beyond you. It surprised Megan that all of them seemed doable with what she had on the room.
Now she just had to pick
