She crosses the living room with long, purposeful strides and then raps softly on your brother's bedroom door. It's already slightly ajar so, without waiting for a response, she carefully eases it open.

He's sitting on his bed tightening his shoelaces and looks up quizzically. His eyes flicker from your mother to you, clutched unceremoniously in her hand.

"Yeah?"

"You working today?" your mother asks sweetly.

"Nope. Going to see Savannah."

Savannah is your brother's girlfriend -- a sweet girl, pretty in a plain sort of way, carefree and considerate. She was always remarkably nice to you.

"Can you take your brother?"

You see the briefest flicker of...something in his eyes. "Yeah, yeah, definitely. We're just gonna go see a movie."

Your mother sets you carefully beside him. "What're ya'll going to go see?"

You hope your confusion isn't apparent. Perhaps you read too much into her actions upon waking up -- but then her hand drifts over to begin tugging playfully at your feet and you start to regain your optimism. For now....you aren't really looking forward to three hours in a movie theater cupholder.
