Jenn ponders her next move in silence, looking down at her hands folded neatly in her lap on your bed. The pattering of raindrops against your window being the only noise, and in that moment your heart thumps. She's really cute, even if you have to look up at her face when she's standing up... thanks to the swap.
Her dazzling blue eyes flash with clarity. Raising a finger into the air, she declares, "How about we swap our knowledge of Biology??"
You sit there on the bed next to her dumbfounded. "Wha... What? Why would you want to do that?"
"Three reasons!" She explains. "First, that Biology test is next week and I know you haven't studied much. You might be good at math and English, but science really isn't your thing... no offense!"
"No dispute there..." You chuckle nervously, rubbing the back of your head. Feeling tremendously grateful in having such a smart (albeit a bit too bookish) friend to tutor you in that subject. "You're the top student in the class, while I'm struggling to get by with a 'C' average. But..."
"No buts!" Jenn persists, tapping her next finger. "Second, I wanna see if you can perform mental swaps. You said the gypsy gave you the ability to swap anything between people, right? If this type of swap is also possible, just think of the possibilities! And third, you're a really wonderful person for wanting to help others out without concern for yourself. Who else would give away their umbrella to an old lady in the middle of a rain storm? Please, let me help you by making this switch."
Jenn melts your heart with that face she does, causing you to blush and look away. She knows you can't resist. You clear your throat and reply, "Well... okay then.... let's swap our knowledge of Biology."
Just like before, a blinding brilliant flash engulfs the room. In the blink of an eye it is gone again. You gaze over to Jenn, who is staring at you equally confused. She straightens her silky black hair and stands up.
"Did it work this time?" She asks. "I don't feel any different."
"Only one way to find out..." You mutter, sifting through your desk for your Biology notes. Recovering your spiral-bound notebook, you flip through the pages mouth agape. "Jenn, come here! This is incredible!"
Diagrams. Tables. Bulleted facts. Boxes of definitions copied carefully and organized neatly on a thoroughly sticky-note applied, annotated Biology notebook. The notes being way better than you are used to making, yet they bear your own handwriting.
"Wow, these are really good notes." Jenn remarks, leaning over and placing a hand on your shoulder to get a look. "I feel like I should know some of this stuff... but... hmm. I guess the swap worked again! Pretty cool, huh!?"
"Cool? This is unbelievable!" You exclaim, Jennifer's knowledge trickling into your mind like a rapidly flowing river. Feeling silly that you didn't understand all these previously straightforward concepts before. Which can only mean...
"I guess this means you'll have to tutor me now!" She smiles.
"We can do that another time... didn't you want to watch that movie?" You recall your conversation earlier today. Setting aside the notes, you place the disc into your DVD player and turn on the TV. Two of your most valued possessions, having mowed more than a few lawns a couple years ago in order to afford them. It serving as a nice way to pass the time between you and Jennifer on rainy days like these.
------
"Wow! What a surprise ending! Ha ha ah!" Jenn laughs as the final credits roll. She adjusts the pillows stuffed against the bed boards, beside which you two were resting while watching the movie. She stretches her hands over her head and yawns.
"You wanna stay for dinner?" You ask.
She looks out the window, the light pole outside shimmering in a milky yellow beam against the rain, which is still smattering down in sheets. "Sure, just let me text my Mom and let her know. Although, I wouldn't mind having a piece of that hunky beefcake lead actor! Did you see his muscles?"
You shrug, "Yeah, so what?" Feeling rather inadequate compared to that guy, seeing how infatuated she seems. "Besides, that actress is much more to my liking anyway."
Jenn pushes against you playfully. "Duh! All boys your age love those kind of women."
"What's that supposed to mean?" You retort.
"I think you know what I mean!" She smirks, cupping her boobs in front of you. Seeing your face redden, she adds, "Hah! Don't pretend like it's not true! Boys are perverts always thinking about sex. You can't help yourselves."
"Hey, take that back!" You say, trying to avoid gazing too obviously at her chest.
"Or what, pipsqueak?" She giggles, holding you back with her longer arms. "God, I love being taller for once!"
"You know what they say, Jenn? The bigger they are, the harder they fall!" You shout, pulling her by the arm and throwing her onto the bed. Causing her to erupt into a fit of giggles. Recovering quickly, she folds one leg over her thigh in a ladylike fashion.
"I think we can have a lot of fun with these mental swaps." She concludes. "But we don't even know the limitations... if there are any. Are these swaps permanent, or can we swap back?"
"Let's try trading back our height first." You suggest, which she agrees reluctantly. Another flash of light.
"Guess I'm back to being the pipsqueak." Jenn breaks the silence.
"It's okay for girls to be short... I think it makes them a lot cuter anyway."
She grins, "Oh, so you think I'm a cutie, Joshie?" Seeing your reaction, she guffaws, "It is way too easy pressing your buttons! It's been that way since fifth grade after all."
"Well, I do think you're cute..." You admit. "And who can deny how smart you are? And kind..."
Jennifer stops giggling and gets a more serious expression on her face. Looking at you intently for a moment, before flicking her hair and changing the subject and huffing. "I would be a lot smarter if you didn't steal my knowledge of Biology from me!"
"Hey, that was a fair trade! Besides, you proposed it..." Your voice trails off, following Jenn out of your bedroom into the kitchen. She says hello to Courtney, Bri, and Kim, your mom. Based on how often she comes over to your house, the others treat Jenn like family. Brianna adoring her like a second older sister, and Courtney admiring her more like a friend. The two of them being much more simpatico on teenage girl stuff that doesn't interest you very much.
You place settings for everyone at the table. Before long, Mom takes a meat loaf out of the oven and sets it down next to some other fixings. Brianna talking about her soccer practice and Courtney about something one of her friends said to another friend at school today involving some other girl. Losing track of her story after the third-or-so friend... thinking instead about your mysterious and intriguing swap powers.
After dinner...
