The curse

    by: Morphology Author IconMail Icon
The rain continued to fall at a significant rate with no appearance of quitting any time soon. The constant pitter patter of the rain was only interrupted by the couple of cars that drove by. Josh walked on and soon found he was near a bus stop. "Too bad I don't have a bus pass." He said to himself as he took refuge from the rain in the empty, enclosed stop. He furled up his umbrella and sat down in the enclosure. Back a few years back, the city started to put on these plexiglass enclosures up after much of the community complained about the long waits for the public transportation and having to do so with the constantly changing weather. 'At least, I can take a small break.' Josh thought to himself as he heard a squeaking sound. The sound reminded him of the horrible carts at the big-box store Wal-Mart and he couldn't help but roll his eyes.

"Is this seat taken?" A gravely voice asked as Josh turned to see an older woman pushing a well worn walker. Her hair looked like she had just got out of the shower and her clothes were sopping wet too. Josh got up and offered her the seat. He noticed that she seemed to be smelling of cat urine and deciding not to make eye contact with the woman, Josh continued to look straight ahead ignoring the lady almost as if he was entranced by the white noise that the rain caused. "It's really coming down today, isn't it?" The older lady asked him with a seemingly aggravated tone.

He just nodded his head and tried his best not to breathe out of his nose to help avoid the smell the seemed to be emanating from the old lady.

Seemingly a little irritated at the lack of interest her 'shelter partner' seemed to have, she replied. "Yes and I can certainly feel it in my old bones." Josh looked over and noticed that she seemed to be wringing her hands trying to alleviate some of the pain that the years of hard work caused in her gnarled hands.

"Mhmm...." Josh replied as he noticed the rain starting to let up some. Not wanting to assault his senses any longer, Josh left the shelter without saying a word or gesturing over to lady to tell her farewell.

"Aren't you a bit a pretentious asshole." The elderly lady responded back to him as she watched him avoid a puddle of water that began to fill up in a pot hole. She narrowed her eyes as she watched Josh laugh at his freedom. Having enough of his attitude, she brought up her gnarled hands and pointed both of them in his direction. As she replied under her breath, she chuckled slightly at her target as he stopped dead in his tracks looking around for something around him.

"Since you care about how you look around others, you shall be cursed to swap the traits that others wish to give you."

"What?" Josh replied while he looked around the street to find the mysterious voice, but soon found that as mysteriously and quickly that it had started, he noticed that it had ended, just as quick.

Looking up and down the street in hopes to find the owner of the mysterious voice, but only found the occasional stray animal wandering the rain soaked streets. "What the..." He shook his head in disbelief. "Well, I guess I better get back to getting home before Courtney and Bri worry." With the rain coming down even harder than before and his umbrella seemingly disappeared, Josh found he made better time by running. Several minutes later, Josh found his way back to the home and in the bathroom to dry off and put on some dry clothes. Having found some drier clothing, he made his way to his room to see about getting his homework done.
