This choice: An experiment goes awry. • Go Back... As Josh started to walk home with his umbrella held above his head, he marveled at how the town seemed deserted when the skies opened up. The streets were barren from any cars and all the animals were wise enough to seek shelter, leaving the streets empty and desolate. With his hurry to get home, Josh didn't notice the dark blue van creeping up behind him, like a cat sneaking up their prey. Almost sensing that something was a miss, Josh turned around just in time to see the doors open and several men in white lab coats approaching him. Not really knowing what was going on, he instinctively backed away, but found his way blocked by a wall. The men in lab coats raised their hands as if to calm him down. "It's okay." The taller of the men replied. He looked older than the others, with the grey air starting to show along the side of his head. "We just wanted to talk to you about a job."
"What?" Josh answered back in complete disarray. "A job?"
The shorter man, who looked like he was also the youngest of the trio. "Yeah." He said. "You see, we're from the local university and we're in need of somebody to help test an experiment."
"What?" Josh repeated in disbelief. "You want me to be a guinea pig for an experiment?"
"Well, yes and no." The older man started to explain. "You see, we really need somebody, but you're underage and we will need your parent's permission before we can go through with anything." The professor was always the type to cross the t's and dot the i's when it came to the proper paper work. "If you're willing to do this for us, have your parent or guardian sign these forms." He brought out a manila folder and handed it to Josh.
"What's this experiment and why did you choose me?" Josh asked as he put the folder into his backpack to help protect it from any potential downpour.
"Well, we really can't disclose that information right now." The older man answered. "You see, it's rather top secret and we really don't want to tell you unless you can get one of your parents to sign the form. As why we chose you, well without going too far into the experiment, I would have to say you're the most compatible with the equipment." With that said, the trio of gentlemen got back into their van and drove off, leaving Josh wondering exactly what just happened.
Hurrying home, Josh decided to take a shortcut and go through an empty lot to his home. As he grew closer, Josh noticed that the driveway was empty. "I wonder where Mom is?" He wondered to himself as he went through the door and found it empty. "Hello!?" He called out but was meant with no answer. Shrugging, Josh tossed his backpack onto the dining table and noticed a note from his Mom. Saying that she took Bri and Courtney to visit their Grandmother the next state over. "I guess they won't be back for a couple days." With a mischievous look in his eye, Josh took out the folder and started to look over the paperwork.
After reading it several times, Josh really didn't see the harm in doing it, and with a bit of dishonesty, took out a pen from his backpack and quickly signed the form. "I will stop by there tomorrow and see what this is about." Josh chuckled to himself as he put the paperwork back into his backpack indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
