Katie O'Brien the board says and you take a few moments to digest what that means. You stare up at the ceiling not trusting yourself to move yet. Just feeling the soft weight on your chest and the strange absence between your legs that tells you your life will never be the same.
"I'm a woman," you say to the ceiling your voice cracking forcing you to clear your throat.
"I'm a woman!" you try again your voice high and clear and strange, echoing in the small room.
You had known this was a possibility going in. The doctors had been very clear that they planned to give you the first donor body that became available and you had agreed. The rate your illness had been progressing you simply didn't have time to be picky. None the less waking up to find yourself without your Y chromosomes is an enormous shock. You feel queasy as a thousand questions press in on you at the same time.
How can you face your family like this?
Will you be able to return to your job?
Do you even have valid I.D. now?
You groan and cover your face trying to press away the tears that are stinging your eyes.
"There there, Mr Smith" a warm male voice reassures you "I understand this must be a very great shock for you but rest assured we are going to do everything we can to support you through this transition."
You open your eyes to see your doctor standing over you. He is probably trying to look calm and professional but he is coming across more than a little smug.
"Jackass" you think to yourself "Probably already writing his speech for the Nobel Prize."
Still, you don't want to seem ungrateful, he did save your life after all.
"Hi Doc" you say instead, trying to sound cheery "I guess your gadget worked then?"
"Yes Sam" he says practically beaming with pride "and we were fortunate enough to find a compatible donor in the knick of time."
"Yeah, and don't get me wrong I'm happy to still be here, but did you really have to put me in a woman?" you say tugging at the tangle of long hair that falls in your eyes.
"Of course" The Doctor nods "It wouldn't have been our first choice but beggars can't be choosers as the saying goes. And thanks to Ms O'Brien's donation you will get to live a long and healthy life, that's the thing to focus on here."
"Well, I guess it beats the alternative" You agree "It's just going to take some getting used to is all."
"That's the spirit," the Doc smiles down at you "Now we have some tests to run but first I think it would be a good idea if you met the new you first. That's if you feel up to it?"
Your heart hammers in your chest at the thought of confronting your new body but there doesn't seem like much point in putting it off. You nod and carefully avoid looking at yourself as the doctor helps you off the bed. You wobble on your new legs as you take a few shuffling steps. The doctor pulls back a curtain and you find yourself facing a full-length mirror facing the reflection of Katie O'Brien, your reflection now. You raise a trembling hand to your face as you see Katie is....
