“Is that so? Alexia asked, watching how the merchant stared at the blood dripping from her blade. “Are you sure you wouldn’t want to offer me a son instead?”
He tore his eyes aware from the gore staining the sand and fixed his wide eyes on hers. “No, Lady Alexia, word of your…” He paused as he searched for a tactful way to put it, “…tastes…has spread some ways, so I am well aware that such an offer would be to your liking.”
“Really?” she wondered aloud, adding as much false shock to that word as she could. “And what, pray tell, else about me has ‘spread some ways’?” putting a bit of force in her voice.
The merchant leader sputtered and turned a frightful shade much paler than his typical swarthy hue. He then spent the next several minutes praising Alexia and her band of warriors. She rather thought that made up some of it on the spot, but it all sounded rather good in any case. She might need to borrow some of the tales herself to better stake her claim as the powerful and rightful ruler of her territory.
While he continued to blather on, Alexia turned her focus to the possibility of adding another woman to her harem. The several she had already were fantastic and well worth the trouble she had in keeping them happy. Yet, a new one might be a welcome change of pace. She did feel some concern about the process though. The others came to Alexis of their own will, wanting nothing to do with the threat of suffering under one of the more brutish warlords that stalked the Samin. This merchant’s daughter might not be so willing to be used as trade object, much as Alexis faced before she struck out on her own.
She decided she could at least examine the woman; see if it was worth her time and effort. The rest of her band were still busy with their tasks while the scouts moved ahead to investigate the path ahead.
“Is she with you?” Alexis interrupted the merchant at last.
“Y-ye-yes, of course, Lady Alexis, I thought you might be interested, so I brought her along just in case.” Alexis saw the twinkle in his eye, and knew he was eager to close a deal that was so close, he could almost taste it. “Please, if you wouldn’t mind, come this way.”
He then turned to lead the warlord back along the wagon train. Several carts later, he peaked through the cloth and asked someone to step out. He helped the young woman to step out into the blazing sun where Alexis got her first good look of her potential new woman. She is a…
