Denial

"Aha...ha..ha..."

You begin chuckling and then shaking your head. You slap your cheeks with your hands and then shake the rest of your body. Then, as if she had said nothing, you stroke her head.

"For a moment there, I thought you just spoke to me there. I think I drank too much coffee..."

Mel's eyes seemed to sadden, knowing that she could frighten you if she corrected you. Ultimately, she had already resolved to disclose the truth to you.

"Alex, I'm sorry. Please don't get scared. I've always been able to speak, but couldn't, especially not when your parents were around."

This time, you jump and move a step away from Mel. With a correction by Mel, you know knew it wasn't coffee. She could have just remained silent and let it go, but at this moment, your life would be forever changed.

"M-m-mel?"

"Oh...poor thing. I'm sorry to suddenly start speaking like this. I wish there was a way I could do this gradually, but..."

Her words drown out at the fact that not only had Mel long understood you, she could even speak the human language. Even though her voice was gentle and sweet, it didn't stop your heart from beating hard.
