As I was seated at a table with the wedding party, they alternated man, woman, man, woman and so on. I was wedged between two large hippo's who's hips were bigger than the table was wide. The sides of their butt cheeks were on my egs, but I really didn't mind since I was focused on other things such as the disaster that could become of this.
A large hippo took the microphone from it's stand about a half hour after everyone was seated.
"Ladies and gentlemen. It is my great honor to introduce Mr. and Mrs. Summers!" The reception hall erupted with loud claps and a lot of cheering with some loud whistles coming from the back.
I sat there clapping with a genuine looking smile that fooled everyone... even my new stepsister that weighed way more than me. It may have been what she whispered to me before my dad and step mother got introduced.
(Flashback)
"If you don't have a genuine smile when the bride and groom are introduced, I will sit on you all night."
(Back to reality)
"Don't get me wrong. I'm happy for my dad, but the wound of losing my mother is still fresh." I say as the clapping subsides.
"Listen bro. You need to be happy for yourself too. After all. I'm your step sister." She says and kisses my cheek to where I wipe off the slobber and glare at her.
"I don't know if I'll like this. I mean yeah. My dad is very happy and my step mother is very nice, but I'm still healing. She is not a replacement." You say knowing you'll regret saying that, but you're pleasantly surprised by your step sisters response.
"No one can replace your mother. She's not wanting to replace her, just fill the void. She doesn't think you'll instantly get to like the situation either. She knows it will take you time. She can wait no matter how long." She says.
"What if I never change? What if I never like it?" You ask as tears sting your eyes just thinking about your mother.
"You will. I know it." Your step sister says and hugs you tightly. You do find comfort is her large warn belly against you, so you return the hug and a tear makes its way down your face. She instantly wipes it off.
"Thank you." You say.
"That's what I'm here for bro." Sh says.
"Ladies and gentlemen. The food is all ready. Please let the bride and groom go first then the wedding party after them. The ushers will dismiss you so you can eat, so please be patient." The announcer says.
A low rumble of conversations is happening and an occasional laugh rings out. You think you might like this. After all. You do like your step sister and she is very warm and welcoming.
