This choice: Akira finds Princess Haru alone with one of the captured thieves.  •  Go Back...
Chapter #9

The Princess and the Cat

    by: Silverhammer Author IconMail Icon
Akira slipped under the door, finding himself in a giant, ornate hallway, just as beautiful and excessive as the room he was just in. Apparently these three giants lived in the lap of luxury while they tormented the tiny people below.

"If I survive this, I might have to come back for multiple trips," Akira mused to himself. "There's enough treasure here to..."

Akira was cut off as the evil giantess Haru emerged into the hallway, the world shaking with her booming footsteps. Akira barely dodged one as he hugged the wall. She seemed to be holding something in her hands.

"This is the penalty for breaking into our castle, you wretched, insignificant thief!" Haru declared angrily. "You and your friends will suffer for everything you've..."

She trailed off and looked nervously behind her. Confident that her fellow princesses were out of earshot, she broke character once again.

"YOU ARE JUST THE MOST ADORABLE KITTY IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD!" Haru gushed, nuzzling the poor feline to her cheek as he yowled in panic. "I'm going to hug you, and squeeze you, and name you Mona-chan!"

---

Morgana, who had been sitting in Haru's lap and letting her absently pet him as they listened to Futaba's story, immediately jumped down to the floor and gave her a wary look. The heiress sighed dejectedly.

---

"I am not a cat!" 'Mona-Chan' shouted indignantly as soon as he could breathe again. "My name is Morgana! I am a famous bard that you and your wicked friends cursed into becoming a cat after you heard the mean song I wrote about you! You three just do so many evil deeds that you don't remember!"

---

"Wait, are we giants, princesses, or witches?" Makoto asked confused. "This story's inconsistent!"

"It's a fairy tale," Ann pointed out. "It doesn't have to be consistent."

"Yes it does!" Makoto insisted. "Just because a story has fantastical elements doesn't mean it doesn't at least have to follow its own internal logic..."

"Makoto?" Akira said. "This is written by a fifteen year old who never meant for anyone to see it."

Makoto conceded the point, and Ryuji continued reading.

---

"Well, I am your princess," Haru said, the sweetness gone from her voice as her cheery facade fell. "And if I say you're my new pet cat, you are my new pet cat. Otherwise, you will be my new impractically tiny seat cushion. Do we understand each other, Mona-chan?"

"Y-yes, your Highness! Meow! Meeeooow!" Morgana squeaked desperately. Content that her new pet would be obedient, Haru brought the balefully polymorphed feline to her quarters, setting him down on her table, which was littered with assorted odds and ends that the giantess had deemed cute and stolen from the villagers over the years.

"I've always wanted a cat!" Haru chirped. "Mako-chan kept saying I was too irresponsible, but here you are, and this is my chance to prove her wrong! Oh! I have some toys for you! I'll be right back!"

As soon as Haru left the room, Akira scaled the table- his experiences today making him quite the expert at climbing tall things quickly, and found the cat.

"Who are you?" Morgana demanded.

"My name's Akira Kurusu," Akira introduced himself. "I'm here to rob the evil giantesses and save their imprisoned Oracle. And you, apparently."

Morgana stared at him a bit longer. "And where is your shirt?"

"Long story."

"Okay, whatever. Look, we need to save my lackeys too." Morgana insisted. "They're complete idiots, and it's their fault we got caught, but they don't deserve to die here."

Akira nodded, suppressing his frustration at just how complicated this day was getting. He'd be liberating the whole village from the rule of the wicked princesses at this rate. "Fine. Where are they?"

"Skull got taken by the blonde one," Morgana explained. "She's gonna use him as a garnish for her meal of crepes and children tonight."

---

Ann growled.

---

"And Inari let it slip that he's an artist, because he literally never shuts the hell up about it," Morgana explained. "The leader of the giantesses took him to the foyer and is making him paint her portrait. He's not a very good painter, and when Princess Makoto figures that out, she's probably going to crush him to death for being a horrible pretentious idiot."

---

"Oh, right," Yusuke said as his eye twitched. "Futaba wrote this."

"I think your paintings are lovely, Yusuke-kun," Haru said, putting a conciliatory hand on his arm. "I don't always understand them, but..."

"Thank you, Haru-san."

---

"We'll save them," Akira promised. "But first, I need your help. There's a key that Princess Haru keeps on a chain around her neck. We'll need it to free the Oracle. Any ideas?"

"I think I can help," Morgana said with a nod. "I was a bard before these monsters transformed me. I bet I can..."

The earth shook around them as Princess Haru returned.

"Quick! Hide!" Morgana hissed. Akira leapt into a pile of pilfered children's dolls just before the giant princess entered the room, unaware as ever of the new intruder.

"Okay, Mona-chan, I found some yarn, a saucer of cream, and this dead rat that Princess Ann was going to put in her mouth before Mako-chan took it from her and threw it away," Haru said cheerfully as she set the items on the table with a flourish.

---

"OH COME ON!" Ann snapped.

---

"Um, thank you, Princess!" Morgana said, stomaching his revulsion at the giant rat carcass (though the Olympic sized swimming pool of cream would have been tempting any other day). "Allow me to sing you a song in gratitude."

"Oh, that sounds lovely, Mona-chan," Haru said, leaning in. "Let's hear it!"

Morgana cleared his throat, and sang a soothing, relaxing tune. As Haru listened, she felt her eyelids grow heavy.

"Oh, Princess Haru, so sleepy and fair,
with forehead massive and nice fluffy hair,

[Putting songs in books is dumb. Books don't have sound. It's just bad poetry! Skipping this for now. -F]

---

"If she's this disdainful of the written word, I don't know why she's expressing herself in this way," Yusuke said.

---

As Morgana finished his lullaby, Princess Haru slumped back in her chair, snoring in a very non-princess-like manner after being lulled into a deep sleep. The key on her necklace was prominently visible just above her massive breasts.

"Okay!" Morgana whispered to Akira. "Now it's your turn. You'll have to climb her and get the key. I don't have thumbs."

"Right," Akira said with a nod. He jumped from the table to the snoozing princess's lap, clinging to the fabric of her dress as he started to climb...
