Chapter #8

Yu the Novelty

    by: Silverhammer Author IconMail Icon
Before Rise could suggest bringing her tiny senpai home with her- for his own safety of course- there was a loud knock at the front door, followed by the sound of it opening.

“Yu-kun!” Chie called out, slipping off her sneakers and putting them next to Rise’s sandals. “Your door’s open!”

“Sorry we’re late,” Yukiko said, following her best friend into the house. “We stopped to pick up extra ingredients.” She set a Junes bag filled with things that emphatically did not belong in curry on the counter and took stock of what was already laid out. “And it’s a good thing we did, Chie. It looks like he forgot to buy anchovies…”

“I bet he forgot the whipped cream too,” Chie scoffed as she rolled her eyes. “And he’s giving US lessons?”

Rise sighed. She’d hoped for a little bit more alone time with her tiny senpai, but now that the other girls were here, they needed to know what happened to him. Clutching Yu securely in her hands, she got up and walked to the counter.

“Oh! Rise-chan, you’re already here,” Yukiko greeted the former idol with a smile. “Where’s Yu-kun?”

Having no idea how to ease into what befell their leader, Rise merely held Yu up to the two girls, who stared at him in slack-jawed astonishment.

“Um… hi girls,” Yu said, rubbing the back of his head nervously.

---

“Yukiko-senpai, stop that!” Rise scolded. “Just where are you touching?!”

“But he’s so cute!” Yukiko giggled, once again poking at the tiny classmate she held in her hand.

Yu grimaced as he endured Yukiko’s well meaning if overenthusiastic curiosity. Unfortunately, much like Rise before them, Chie and Yukiko were more focused on how cute Yu was at his new size than trying to help in any way.

“Has Nanako-chan seen this yet?” Chie asked, visibly excited at the prospect of seeing Yu’s adorable little cousin play with him. “Where is she anyway?”

“She’s at a friend’s house,” Yu said firmly. “And let’s not hand the fragile bug-sized person to a seven-year-old. I don’t see that ending well for anyone.”

“She’s very mature for her age, Yu-kun,” Yukiko insisted, clearly imagining the same thing Chie was and desperately wanting to make it a reality.

“So, what are we going to do about this, senpai?” Rise asked, cutting into the conversation. Now that she no longer had her tiny crush all to herself, the novelty of the situation was quickly wearing off and it was sinking in that Yu needed to return to normal size soon. “This happened because you ate some weird mushroom, right? Should we take you to the hospital?”

“That might not be a bad idea,” Yu agreed. His only hesitation was that the closest hospital was the one he’d started working at part time. A certain nurse there incessantly flirted with him, and the prospect of her seeing him like this was intimidating, to say the least.

“Wait, is that how it happened?” Chie asked. “Then why did your clothes shrink with you?”

“That’s an excellent question, Chie,” Yu admitted. “I have no idea.”

The fleshy platform Yu was sitting on violently shook as Yukiko was overcome with laughter. Chie quickly stepped in and gently cupped Yu in her hands before her friend could drop him.

“I… I was thinking of tiny, naked Yu-kun running around in his own clothes,” Yukiko explained between chortles. “Peeking his head out of his shirt collar and… pffft HAHAHAHAHA!”

“There’s no telling what’ll set you off, is there?” Chie sighed.

After some time, Yukiko calmed herself down. “M-maybe it’s a magic thing? Like the Midnight Channel?” Yukiko suggested, still fighting off the giggles. “We could take you there, Yu-kun. Konohana Sakuya learned a lot of healing spells in Mitsuo’s dungeon, so maybe I can grow you back?”

“Maybe,” Yu allowed. “If that doesn’t work, I can always check the Velvet Room.”

“That’s where you go when you zone out and get new Personas, right?” Rise confirmed. “That place with the big-nosed guy and the chauffer lady you told us about?”

“Oh, yeah, that’s where whats-her-name is from!” Chie said, snapping her fingers as she tried to remember. “Dresses funny, has an English-sounding name, insults me and Yukiko all the time…”

“Marie-chan,” Yukiko supplied helpfully.

“Oh,” Rise said, eyes narrowing. “Her.”

Yu swallowed. Remembering that Marie existed probably wasn’t going to sell the girls on the Velvet Room idea, especially since none of them had any experience with it beyond his vague explanations for why he kept zoning out near the TV World entrance.

After a long silence, Chie spoke up again. “Maybe you’ll just grow back on your own? Once the poison mushroom or whatever goes through your system?”

Yu frowned. “I’m not sure it’s going to work like that, Chie. And even if it does, what do I do in the meantime?”

“I dunno, business as usual?” Chie suggested with a shrug. “We’ll stick by you and keep you safe. I mean, you were going to spend the day with us anyway, right?”

“You just want to play with teeny Senpai all day,” Rise accused the two girls.

“And you don’t?” Chie shot back.

“I totally do,” Rise admitted sheepishly.

“I was expecting a cooking lesson today, Yu-kun,” Yukiko pointed out with a mischievous smile.

Yu considered his options. Much as he would have preferred the Velvet Room or a hospital, both came with downsides, and there wasn’t a guarantee either would work. And while there was even less of a guarantee that doing nothing would fix the problem, he wondered if it would be best to humor his giant friends for now. After all, the novelty of him being tiny would have to wear off for them eventually.
