Chapter #5

Supplemental Gains

    by: Unknown
As a Meowstic, Sylvie understood the importance of restraint better than some. It was for this reason she didn't join her fellow students in rushing to leave school right after the final bell. Not that she could blame them; they'd spent all day cooped up in class and dinner wasn't too far off.

Still, midterms were coming. That meant even more studying than usual.

At least the library was quiet, save for the soft groans of the Illumise sitting across the table from Sylvie.

"You said it's a mythology paper, right?" Sylvie asked. "Then why not try Sinnoh? I hear they have plenty of myths over there."

The Illumise, Aurore, grimaced. "We're not learning about Sinnoh right now. Or any of the other regions."

         "You're only covering Kalos?"

         Aurore nodded.

Sylvie sighed. "So Xerneas, Yveltal, or Zygarde? But that's only three choices. How are you having trouble deciding?"

"Because everybody's gonna be writing about them. How is my paper supposed to be anything special if we're all covering the same topics?" Aurore slumped forward, resting her chin in her hand. "What does mythology have to do with a Writing Major anyway?"

"This is a writing project, isn't it?" Sylvie gave her a small smirk. "Besides, it's an exercise in thematic storytelling."

Aurore just groaned and looked away. "Do you have to be so unhelpful? My grade's kind of important here, you know."

Sylvie's ears drooped the slightest bit. "I'm not trying to be."

"I know, I know." Aurore sighed. "Sorry, it's just... I guess I'm just that kind of artist."

         "Desperate to stand out?"

         "Always."

The two had a short giggle at that. Sylvie took a moment to survey the rest of the library. It was mostly empty, with only the staff doing their jobs and a few of the more diligent students studying. She wasn't going to get much of that done today. Not really a problem, considering she always did well.

"Still," she said, turning back to Aurore, "it's awfully mean to make you write an essay this close to midterms."

"No kidding," Aurore replied dryly. "But apparently, Mr. Pyroar disagrees. Jerk."

Sylvie gave her a sympathetic smile. "Well, knowing you, you'll figure something out just fine. I don't think you've ever gotten anything less than a perfect score on an essay."

Aurore smiled back. "If you put it that way, I've got nothing to worry about." She stood and picked up her school bag. "I guess I'll just write about all three and talk about life and death or something."

They said their goodbyes and Aurore left. Sylvie remained seated.

Their meetup didn't last long, so she could squeeze in a little study time before going home. Then again, she was more interested in finding a book to read. Preferably something short. Or would that still take up too much time?

Sylvie shook her head. She'd spent enough time at school as is. For now, she just wanted to go home and enjoy a nice dinner with her parents. But before she could even stand up, someone approached her.
