It had been a tough time at the police academy for Mary Green. Starting out she had been completely unsuited for any sort of physical police work with her generous frame. A bottom heavy woman she had always ended up out of breath following hard physical labour, and consequently hated being fat. After four years of training she had discovered a natural aptitude towards detective work as well as the loss of a good 20 to 40 pounds of body fat. She was still thickset, to be sure, but not at all the lardass she used to be. Another year and she quickly rose in the ranks of the VPD to be assigned as a junior partner to Detective Ben Feldman.
Ben was the opposite of Mary in every way, tall and slender to her medium height and stocky, blondish to her dark red, curly to her straight. Personality wise they were opposites. She was shrewd, a charismatic schemer and eminently practical, that translated into a toughness that belayed her height. He was a free spirit and somewhat looser, more intuitive and open, a gentle beanpole swaying in the wind. The only qualities the two shared were relative youth, a dislike of crime, and a certain fullness about the rear, but they were good friends and effective partners.
That spring, Chief Mamako called them into her office to assign the detectives to a new case, a particularly difficult one involving
