Eventually I came across what appeared to be a massive log resting in the water. It was clearly from a tree trunk, because it was too large to be anything else, but on closer inspection I found that the wood had mostly been planed smooth. Not completely planed, thankfully, and there were still enough hand and footholds for me to clamber to the top.
When I got to the top, I discovered that the log was in fact a giant canoe! There was a brown sack in the front, filled with ears of yellow corn -- perhaps the owner's lunch. At this point, my stomach made its position clear, and I suddenly felt pangs of hunger. But another part of me wanted to keep exploring the canoe.
Suddenly I heard footsteps coming down the beach... people! As two Native American girls came into view, I waved and shouted to them. But either they didn't hear me or thought I was a bug, because they paid me no attention -- and got into the canoe. As they did so, the canoe rocked and I fell down on my hands and knees. A shadow fell across me. I had just enough time to look up and see...
