Jake's not behind it

Jake's life was about to change due to no fault of his own. He wasn't going to be granted powers or find and strange magical device. He wasn't going to upset a witch who would give him an unreasonable curse for accidentally bumping into them.

Instead Jake was about to encounter someone who could do these things. Now he was going to be caught up in it when he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now the question is, was it someone who was cursed and due to the nature of the curse Jake would be caught up in it. Or was it someone with powers who decided it would be fun to use it on Jake?
