Her stomach rumbled. Nicotine and bull-piss could only get you so far. She parked the car in front of a diner and went inside. The specials sign was empty, the napkins and relish still stashed behind the counter. The place looked homely, but they clearly were not expecting a lot of business. A girl was sitting on a stool, taking occasional sips from her coffee while inspecting her phone.
"Good afternoon." She said, glancing up from her phone. "Coffee?"
"Sure." Tiana smiled, already liking her laid-back attitude. She sat down in one of the booths, looking around for some indication of the type of food they served here. Moments later the waitress returned with a steaming cup of coffee, accompanied by a menu.
"Thanks. Oh, and could you bring me an ash-tray?" She said, taking the menu.
"Oh I'm sorry we're a non-smoking establishment." The waitress droned her reply like she was talking about cannibalism.
"Hmm. That's too bad..." Tiana mused. Shame, she was just starting to like the girl.
"Yeah. And if you know what's good for you you'd knock off with that filthy habit. Gives you bad breath. Anyway if you're ready to order just holler." She swayed back to her stool and sat down.
Tiana took a gulp of her coffee, staring at the empty seat in front of her. Bad breath... Fuck, that's what mints were for. Maybe it was time to make her see it wasn't such a filthy habit after all.
