Here's some basic choices.

Snake: A basic snake that preys on smaller animals. Can evolve into dangerous beasts, or into a human like lamia.

Spider: Weak arachnids that frequently get preyed on. At higher levels, can produce venom and silk depending on evolution choices. Can evolve into larger beasts, or into the human like arachne.

Fish: Basic inhabitant of the water. After time, can evolve into a powerful sea monster. However, unable to go onto land.
