Everyone is entitled to a single wish.
These wishes tend to be very strict in what they are actually capable of. For the most part, everyone’s wish can only be something that affects them personally, and even then, not by very much. If you make a wish that cannot be granted, your wish will be… re-interpreted. So it’s very important you get it right the first time.
Most people wish for things like being more attractive, or for some sort of natural talent or ability, or even to change their species or perform minor magical spells. One young wolf boy living in the vastness of suburbia, on the other hand, wished for something different.
”Why…?” His girlfriend wept, a week’s worth of emotion coming out in a single moment. ”I just don’t understand…”
Chris, his family, and his friends, have been planning this for years. When the time came, he was going to wish for a boosted natural talent in writing, as his dream was to one day become an author. When the day finally came, everyone he knew was baffled and horrified when he instead returned home… at a height of around 6 inches tall.
The fallout that followed was unbearable. Not only has he wasted his only wish, but he’s actively handicapped himself. At this height, he was going to be in constant danger, and have to rely on other people’s help just to survive. His lifespan was probably drastically reduced. Everyone thought he had gone mad - that he had decided to ruin his own life for no reason whatsoever.
Seeing his girlfriend’s reaction, however, hurt him the most. Instead of freaking out like everyone else, she did her best to try and understand and support him… but the arctic fox couldn’t keep her emotions bottled up forever. ”I-it’s going to be okay, Val…” He steps forward, gesturing up to her, not able to stand seeing her cry.
”No it’s NOT!” She snapped at him through bitter tears. ”You can’t LIVE like this! You can’t write anymore. You can’t go anywhere by yourself. Hell, how long before somebody accidentally steps on you?” Val shuddered at the very thought of losing him. ”I just… I need to know why. Why would you do this? Why use your wish to… shrink yourself?”
Chris gazes down at his paws with a sigh. The truth… well, it was something he was planning on never telling anybody, even at the cost of seeming like a complete lunatic to everyone he knows. But he couldn’t stand to lie to Val. Not anymore. ”I… I didn’t…” He finally confesses, through gritted teeth. ”I didn’t wish for this.”
She paused, confused. ”What?”
”I didn’t wish to be shrunken down! Well… not exactly…” He sighs. ”I just wished I could… disappear.”
Her eyes widened. ”W-what do you mean?”
He sighed. His entire body was shaking so much with anxiety, he could hardly stand. He had a seat on the table he was standing on, trying to calm himself. ”I… I just hated myself…” He confessed, is voice shaky. ”I hated… existing. Being… who I am. I couldn’t stand being ME anymore. But I didn’t want to die, either. So… I wish to sort of… stop being me. Be something unnoticeable, like a fly on the wall. Y’know, something that watched reality, but does not participate. I guess my wish sort of got… reinterpreted.”
She immediately winds down. After all the confusion she’s felt over the past week… she finally understands. Sadness fills her as cognisance flashes in her eyes. ”Chris…” Her lip quivers. She holds out her hands, her palms cupped together, and he hesitantly climbed up onto them. She gently lifted him up in the air, before lying down on her bed, cuddling him close to her. ”Oh, Chris… why didn’t you tell me…?”
”I… I…” He stuttered, before sighing. ”I… should’ve let you know…”
She shakes her head, wiping the tears from her cheeks. ”I don’t know what made you… hate yourself, but…” She tried to come up with the words. ”I’m not giving up on you! I don’t care what it takes. We’re… we’re still going to make this work…”
With that, they drifted off to sleep together, their futures uncertain...
