Matthew's athleticism could be contributed to Diana. Matthew's tendencies were toward science geekiness. However, the fact that Diana had been involved in some kind of cheerleading activity since she was eight motivated Matthew to become the athlete she could cheer on. So in his senior year, instead of becoming a pale, skinny geek, Matthew was a tanned jock who lettered in football and track.
Physically, Matthew and Diana might have been opposites (Matthew had blonde hair and blue eyes), but they had similar personalities. They were both shy but nice people, and everyone was glad to see them going out.
