Wait for Mother

by: Komfy Kat Author IconMail Icon
While she desperately wanted to go looking for Sarah, she figured now was not a good time. She didn't want her mother to get worried when her little girl wasn't waiting for her. Besides, if she didn't show up in 10 minutes, then she'd know that she probably wasn't coming.

The minutes ticked past, as the crowd of students slowly disappeared as they left for home. Some were walking while others got into their parent's cars. Some left alone, while others in groups. A cool breeze made the hair on the back of Maddie's neck stand up as she shivered, wishing that she'd worn something a little warmer.

She sighed, glancing around at the almost empty school yard. Maybe her mother wasn't coming to get her. Took a few steps closer towards the street, looking around.

"Maddie, over here!" A voice shouted.

She spun looking for the source, and spotted a young girl waving her over beside a dark blue car.

Her heart leapt in excitement as she ran towards the young woman. That was just who she had hoped to find.

Sarah smiled at Maddie, holding the passenger door open for her, "Let's take a little ride while we discuss your situation."

"Yes, lets." Maddie said, getting into the car, a sense of anger welling up inside her at the woman who'd completely turned her life upside down.

A moment later Sarah got into the driver's seat and started the car and driving off. Buildings passed by on both sides of the street as they drove in silence towards some unknown destination.

"So where are you taking me?" Maddie finally said, trying to contain her anger.

"To my shop of course, that was the agreement of the car ride yesterday." Sarah said, with a slight smile, "Though we will have to discuss payment of your other gift."

"You mean turning me into a girl?" Maddie shot.

"Yes that. Usually I get payment before granting a wish, but this time was different." She said, the corner of her mouth dipping slightly before returning to her bright smile.

A few minutes later they arrived in front of a small store set between two department stores. Everyone seemed to be completely ignoring the small shop, which didn't even have a sign stating a name or anything. Sarah got out of the car, and came around to open Maddie's door.

Maddie pushed past her and started walking into the shop, a small bell ringing as she opened the door. Sarah followed, and moved towards an armchair in the corner. Taking a seat, she grabbed a cup of tea from a nearby table.

"So, I'm sure that you're wondering what happened to you, and before you ask. No I can't undo it." the corner of Sarah's mouth dipped again for a moment.

"You didn't plan this did you?" Maddie asked, walking towards Sarah.

"Yes and no." She said, making a gesture with her hand, "I intended to grant this wish, but after we discussed your payment. However, your wish for change was so strong that it seemed to take on a life of its own."

"What does that mean," Maddie said, sitting on the floor in front of the arm chair, "I definitely didn't want to be a girl."

"Maybe not consciously, but you did want a new life, and that's what you got." Sarah said matter-of-factually, "Now, all I can tell you is that your choice will shape the life that is created for you, just as your choice last night decided what age you would be. Though most of them won't be so cut and dry like that. Most of them will watch who you choose to be and adapt accordingly."

"Wait, so you're saying that I will control what happens to me by the choices that I make." Maddie asked, "Doesn't that mean that I can just choose to be a boy again."

"Unfortunately no." Sarah said, her mouth twitching again, "Whatever form you end up taking, you will be stuck as a girl."

"But you just said that I could choose what to become." Maddie shot back.

"No, I said your choices will define who you become." Sarah replied, taking a sip of tea, "Now all I ask in return for this, is that you help me in my shop for a few hours everyday."

"And what if I refuse?" Maddie asked.

"Well if you refuse, things may not go how you want them to at all." Sarah answered, taking another sip of tea, "Though my door would always be open should you change your mind."

"Is there anything else you can tell me about this gift?" Maddie asked, wondering what she should do.

"Not all the changes will be physical. Your actions will define your new personality as well." Sarah warned, blowing lightly on her tea.

Maddie looked towards the floor. This was a lot to take in, but it all made sense. Well, it didn't make sense, but it happened anyway. She had the feeling that she didn't want to anger Sarah, but at the same time it wasn't like she had asked for this in the first place.
