Chapter #6

Half power

Azura glowed with a soft blue light, odd bubbles starting to flow from her body. Corrin gasped, now worried even more. Azura looked up at him. Though many things were possible in this mysterious land, she couldn't quite believe what she was seeing. Was he getting bigger? She looked around, seeing the rubble around them also getting bigger.
"Oh my..." Azura whispered as she realized the truth.
"Azura! What's going on?" Corrin asked, barely stopping himself from yelling.
Azura looked up, meeting his gaze. "Corrin... I'm shrinking!" Hearing herself say it made her deduction seem ridiculous, but there was no denying what was happening.
"What the..." Corrin's mouth hung open, before his expression hardened. He had seen many strange things in such a short space of time, but that didn't mean he should stop helping all those that needed it. The released his grip on Azura, grabbing at the bubbles floating into the air. Was Azura dissolving somehow? He didn't want to think about that, maybe each bubble contained some of her size. His hands phased through the bubbles, seemingly constructs of magic rather than matter. So this wasn't working. He looked back to his dwindling friend, her face now wrought with worry and her hands held in the air, not knowing what to do as she looked around her expanding surroundings.

"How do we stop this?" Corrin asked urgently.
"I don't know!" Azura answered quickly. She had always been so calm, but now she was panicking. She was now shorter than chest height on the prince.
"Is there another dragon vein?" Corrin scanned the area, but could see nothing.
"I can't sense one. Maybe my song!" Azura remembered, and started to sing.
Despite the situation, the song was calming to Corrin. He felt at peace, even though Azura was shrinking before his eyes. The pitch of her voice raised ever so slightly as she got smaller, but it somehow felt to Corrin as if that was the way the song was supposed to sound. He noticed her shrinking slowed, and the glow faded with the last of the bubbles rising out of sight.

"You did it, Azura!" Corrin cheered, joining the small Azura.
"I don't think I did." Azura said. "It seemed like the energy from the dragon vein vanished on its own, I don't think my song had any effect."
"Well, I don't know about that." Corrin awkwardly rubbed the back of his head. "I was worried you'd disappear for a moment!"
"So was I. But I can't leave you on your own now, can I?" Azura gave him a small smile.
"I'm sure glad you didn't." the prince agreed. The top of his small companion's head was roughly level with his hips. How small was she now?
"I seem to have halved in size." Azura noted, as if reading his mind. She looked at the weapon in her hands. "At least my lance and pendant are at the same scale as I am."
"I guess that's a good thing." Corrin said. "You should leave most of the fighting to me."
"No, I can still fight." Azura argued. "Remember I'm with you, no matter what."
"All right, but please be careful." Corrin wasn't very comfortable with the idea of her fighting at half size.
"Trust me. Now let us be off." Azura led the way towards the newly formed stone bridge.
"She's stubborn in an odd way..." Corrin mumbled to himself, before following.

The bridge took them off the island, stretching over the sky. Corrin peered over the edge, instantly regretting his decision when he saw nothing but the sky below.
"Let's try not to fall again..." Corrin remarked.
"Indeed, there's no telling what will happen next time." Azura replied. Corrin looked away from the edge, and towards the small woman walking beside him. He was strolling at quite a leisurely pace, but she was having to trot quite fast. Was she trying to keep up? He knew so little about her, yet it seemed like she had been around for his whole life. From the moment he first saw her, he thought that she was beautiful, and her loss in height hadn't changed that. She was quite a bit cuter at this size though, he thought to himself.

Corrin snapped back to reality when Azura spoke. "There's another island just ahead." she said, pointing.
"Yeah. I wonder what we'll find there..." Corrin mused.
They continued in awkward silence. Azura had so much she wanted to talk about with him, but didn't know what to say. She was having to walk quite fast to keep up with Corrin. She oddly found herself thinking about her mother. Corrin reminded her of the parent she once knew, probably because he is as gentle as she was. She was also probably about the size of a child, so maybe this was like how a walk with her mother used to be.

"Wait!" Corrin held an arm across Azura's path. She nearly stumbled into it, but stopped just in time.
"There's a gap here." Corrin walked over, inspecting the break in the bridge. Odd stone cubes comprised their path, but it didn't seem like any had broken, more that some were missing.
"How odd..." Azura commented. The gap seemed to be a few feet wide. Corrin could certainly jump it, but could she?
"This is exactly what I didn't want to be doing here..." Corrin groaned, remembering the drop.
"It's all right, Corrin." Azura reassured him. "You can do it. Just focus on making the jump and don't think about the fall."
"Easier said than done..." He took a few steps back. Corrin hesitated for a few moments, before running. He jumped into the air, easily making it to the other side. Landing, he quickly turned back towards the distant princess.
"All right, your turn!" he called to her.
Azura nodded. She took a few steps back, much like Corrin had done. She had to be nimble as a dancer, so was sure she could make the jump at her full size. But at half height? She had no choice, there was no other way forward. Running, she jumped right at the edge, maximizing the distance she traveled. She couldn't have timed it better, but was this enough?

Corrin saw Azura jump, concern surging through his heart. He hadn't realized the jump was further for her! He stepped towards the edge, ignoring his fear. Arms out, he was ready to catch her. He wasn't sure if she was going to make it, but was taking no chances. As she neared the edge he caught her in both hands, moving with the momentum of her small body. Stepping and turning away from the edge, he placed her down quickly. Her lance had been jabbing him in the shoulder, plus he thought he might have been holding onto her too strongly.
"Thank you..." Azura gasped as Corrin released his hold.
"Don't mention it. Let's keep going." Corrin said.

They made it to the island without any further difficulties. Corrin was glad to feel grass beneath his feet once more. As Azura stepped off the bridge, it faded away somehow.
"No going back now..." Corrin sighed.
"Behind you, Corrin!" Azura shouted. Corrin turned to see more of their mysterious foes appearing. Taking the initiative, he cut down the first one before it could attack.
"These guys again?" Corrin parried an attack from a second, before striking it down.
At a smaller size, Azura had to be a bit more inventive. She jabbed her foe in the leg, sending it down on one knee in soundless pain, before attacking its head. "We can't stay here." Azura told Corrin.
"I think I can feel a dragon vein somewhere, I'm going to go for it!" Corrin said.
"No!" Azura shouted while fending off another attacker. "I need to do it! We can't have you being my size too!"
"But you might vanish with the next one!" Corrin argued.
"We don't have time to debate this!" Azura insisted, finishing off her foe. "We need to go together!"
"Fine!" Corrin stepped over to the princess. The two of them stayed close, fending off their foes while they headed towards the power they could sense. This fight was much harder for Corrin, having to keep an eye on Azura as well as himself. Azura was also having some trouble, each enemy taking twice as much effort to take down.

"Here it is!" Azura shouted, breaking away from her guard.
"Azura, wait!" he shouted, but had to stay where he was to intercept an attack.
Azura wasted no time. She was determined to shoulder this burden, even if it cost her life. Corrin had to make it out of this, no matter what. She stood over the symbol on the stone, summoning her royal power once more...
