Chapter #9

Calm advice

Subtle spoilers for pre-timeskip Chapter 10, especially the Golden Deer variation

Once Bernie was comfortable in the pocket, Byleth stands up slowly, placing his hand over the pocket to make sure she was stablized before he begins walking out of her room.

Inside the pocket, Bernie leaned against the professor's chest. Considering her size, she expected to feel his heartbeat, and yet...she didn't. She chalked it up to his armored breastplate, but something in the back of her mind told her that wasn't right. Ignoring that, she began to relax.

Byleth walked up the stairs near the main hall, past the offices of the other professors, and into the Archbishop's room.

"Hello, professor," she said calmly, like she always did. It is only after she says this, however, that she notices the quiver slung across his back. "Taking up archery?"

The professor shakes his head. "I was here to speak to Seteth, but perhaps you should hear this as well."

Upon hearing his name, the archbishop's advisor stepped out of his little office alcove. Unlike the woman he advised, he had not trusted Byleth at first glance - which, ironically, made Byleth trust him more than he trusted the archbishop. Though recent events had finally earned the professor Seteth's favor - even going so far as to let his sister enroll in Byleth's class.

"As you both know, today was the first day of the two I was to substitute for Miss Cassagranda as she recovered from the wound the Death Knight gave her," the professor began, eliciting a nod from Seteth. "During the class, a rather large fight broke out. It seems that some of the students blamed each other for what happened to their usual teacher. I was...unable to prevent the fight from escalating."

The archbishop sighed. "That is unfortunate, but understandable. I may have to convene a meeting to remind everyone that Flayn's kidnapping was the fault of the Death Knight and his allies, not any of the students here."

Byleth nodded. "At the peak of the fight, two spells collided, and their combined effect caused the nearest student to shrink."

"Which -" Rhea began.

But her advisor puts two and two together, now recognizing the significance of the quiver. The Black Eagles had only one archer. "Bernadetta," he says, causing the named girl to yelp inside the pocket she had created.

Rhea knew the students better by their last name, but as soon as she heard the yelp, she knew exactly which student it was. "Since it was the interaction between two spells, not a single spell, finding a cure is going to be difficult enough without -"

Once again, Seteth cuts her off, perhaps prompted by Byleth's shaking head, perhaps coming to his own conclusions. "As of this moment, I believe the best thing for her is to remain in the professor's care. She is comfortable around him, and this is a drastic change. She needs some form of familiarity in the world."

Byleth smiled slightly. That was exactly the logic he had used when he brought her to her room before coming here.

Rhea opened her mouth to speak, but closed it without saying anything. She opened it again, only to close it again. Finally, she says, "Yes, I guess that makes sense. I will leave you two - er, three, if she wants to come out - to sort out the details." She gestures to the alcove from which Seteth had originally appeared.

The two men walk into the office, and Byleth reaches for a pen and paper. As he writes, he also speaks. "I believe that my usual class may be able to help me create the provisions I need to take care of Bernie, there is no need to involve the knights." He hands Seteth the note that he had just written. "I came here only to formally request transferring her to the Golden Deer."

He hadn't planned on mentioning the plan of waiting a month to find a cure, but since the archbishop had mentioned it, he had felt a need to make sure that everyone was on the same page. That he wanted to find a cure for if and only if she wished to return to normal, but he wanted it before she made the decision so that if she chose to return to normal she could do so immediately.

Seteth reads the paper. "I see no problems with that," he says, responding both to Byleth's spoken and written words. "I will make the necessary preparations."

Byleth nods, and heads back the way he had come. Past the other professors' offices, down the stairs, past the main hall. He was searching for...
