Elincia held up a glass vial filled with an emissive blue liquid to her eye, staring deeply at it. She tilted it, watching the light refract off the glass as the potion tumbled in its container. Careful not to spill any, she unscrewed the top. The scent of flowers filled the room. She was reminded of the first time she’d come across this curious potion.
After reclaiming Castle Melior, and defeating Daein’s army once and for all, the Crimea Royal Knights sent out patrols to investigate all corners of the castle, looking to round up any holdouts from the enemy. Despite being urged to stay back with the main force where it was safe, Elincia joined Lucia, who was tasked with scouting the royal armory. They didn’t find any enemies, but they did uncover a large stash of curious potions. A wooden chest contained rows and rows of these small glass vials, all filled with the same blue liquid.
They found a mage in their army, who had identified that the potions were perfectly safe, and wouldn’t cause harm, but claimed she was unable to identify their exact effect. Once the mage had departed, Elincia offered to drink the potion to find out what it would do. Throughout their journey, they had encountered many magical items that could empower those who used them, and she hoped this was one of those.
However her idea was immediately shot down by Lucia, out of concern for her safety. Elincia argued, claiming the mages had assured them it was safe. Eventually, the two came to an agreement; Lucia would drink the potion instead of Elincia.
Lucia brought the vial to her lips and tipped it back, letting the potion spill into her mouth. When it was empty, she closed her mouth and swallowed. Elincia remembered watching eagerly, looking to see what effect it would have.
At first nothing looked to be any different. Lucia appeared to be completely unchanged. But then she noticed that despite normally being a few inches taller than Elincia, they were now equal in height. Only seconds later, Lucia was a few inches shorter. The realization seemed to hit them both at the same time. Elincia saw her eyes widen, and she looked down at her hands, as if to confirm what she was seeing.
Elincia giggled. “Lucia, you’re getting smaller! It must be a shrinking potion.”
Lucia back at Elincia, now having to gaze upwards to meet her eyes, as she had shrunk to be level with her chest. “Yes, I suppose it must be,” she sighed. “In that case I’m glad that I was the one to drink it rather than you.”
“Yes, thank you for your protection, my ever-loyal knight.” Elincia smiled, extending her hand to pat Lucia’s ever lowering head.
“Princess, please don’t tease.” Lucia said, brushing off Elincia’s hand with a blush on her face.
After a few minutes of waiting, Lucia stopped shrinking, standing at a mere three inches tall. Elincia crouched down to get a better look at her. She put her hand down on the ground next to Lucia to steady herself, mildly amused at how huge it seemed in comparison to her.
“Lucia, would you like me to pick you up to get you off the floor?” She asked.
Lucia hesitated for a second, as if weighing her pride against the reality of her size. “Yes Princess, thank you.”
Lucia braced herself as giant fingers gently pinched around her waist, then lifted her into the air. She was lifted up, then deposited onto the soft skin of her liege’s hand. Elincia smiled, still enjoying having her knight shrunken so. Had she closed her fingers, she could easily engulf Lucia, hiding her entirely in her fist.
“Princess, can you please not…” Lucia trailed off. She was looking anywhere not to meet Elincia’s gaze.
“I’m sorry Lucia, it’s just that you’re so cute like this.” Elincia said. She stuck out her finger and tried to pat Lucia’s head, as she would a small pet. But Lucia ducked to avoid her touch.
“Yes, it’s just… This is no state for a knight to be in.”
“No Lucia, that’s not true. You’re just as much my dear friend as always. I’m sure that were our positions reversed, you would take excellent care of me.”
Lucia still seemed upset, but less so after hearing those words. “Thank you Princess. Of course I’d always put your safety above all else.”
Elincia smiled. “In that case, perhaps I should put it to the test? There is plenty more shrinking potion after all.”
“That’s, um-”
“I’m only joking Lucia.” Elincia said, laughing at the concern evident on her little friend’s face. “Now come, let’s finish scouting the area.”
Lucia spent the rest of the mission riding on Elincia’s shoulder. Out of concern for Lucia’s pride, whenever they came near anyone else, Elincia would quickly pull Lucia into her hand, obscuring her from sight.
Once their area was secured, Elincia returned to her chambers, with Lucia still perched atop her shoulder. After a few hours, Lucia started to grow back to normal. The mages had assured them that eventually the effect would wear off, but Lucia still seemed relieved when it eventually happened.
Before leaving, she asked Elincia to make sure to destroy the remaining potions. Elincia agreed, thinking it was best to make sure nobody with bad intentions got their hands on them. But as she walked down to where the chest containing the potions was stored, a thought wouldn’t leave her mind; Of what it would be like to shrink down herself.
Every time over the past week that she had asked Lucia what it was like, she had looked away and tried to change the subject. Elincia understood why she wouldn’t want to talk about the shrinking potion, but her curiosity still burned.
That was the thought that flowed through her mind now, as she held the opened vial, mere inches from her mouth. Slowly, she closed the gap, bringing the vial to her lips. She carefully tilted it back, and the liquid flowed into her mouth.
She was surprised at the sweet flavor of the potion, and swished it around in her mouth for a moment, letting the anticipation build for what was to come. Once she was ready, she pushed the potion to the back of her mouth, and swallowed.
As soon as it hit her stomach, she felt a strong feeling of warmth in her core. Like drinking hot soup on a cold day. And quickly, that warmth began to spread. Out from her chest all the way to her fingers. Her whole body encompassed by this tingling feeling.
Only then, when the feeling had spread across her whole, did she begin to shrink. The warmth turned to cold, as if her body was compressing in on itself. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it was a very strange sensation. One which was only compounded by the sight of her surroundings growing all around her.
The chair and desk she was standing next to began to rise, reaching her waist, then her chest. Remembering how small Lucia had become when she had drank the potion, she quickly moved to climb on top of the desk, to make sure she wouldn’t be stuck on the floor once she shrank.
By the time she stood atop the desk, she had shrunken even more. She had to guess she was nearly half her height, and she still felt that tightness encompassing her entire body.
It only took a minute, but it felt like far more, as Elincia shrank to the point where she stood only three inches tall, roughly the same as what had happened to Lucia. She gazed at the objects laid across the desk, marveling at how everyday items such a pen dwarfed her in size.
Although there was a sense of danger since she was utterly helpless at such a small size, Elincia felt a sense of calm. This feeling of being small, it was something she found herself enjoying.
