Steven was never an early adopter of new technology. He just recently bought a smartphone as many events around town seem to revolve around apps. As he was not very familiar with the idea of apps, he asked around for tips on using a smartphone. One day, Becca overheard him asking and suggested him to download the "Whosapp" app, since it is a popular messaging app used by almost everyone in Rotherham. Steven proceeded to download it and tried it out for himself. When he was setting up his profile, a message from the developer appeared:
Congratulations! You are our one-billionth user of our popular messaging app, "Whosapp"! As a prize, we are offering you the opportunity to test try one of our alpha features of the app. This feature is called "Soul Transmission", and it is meant to be the next innovative feature in messaging. Instead of sending messages, this feature can send your spirit from your body to another body who also uses our app! When you are in a chat room with one of your contacts, press the "S" button in the top bar next to the contact's name to initiate this feature. We hope that it will provide better communication and response in our users. There are several reminders when using this feature:
1. You can only use this feature with your smartphone. So if you are currently inhabiting a body that is not your own, remember to bring your smartphone with you since you cannot return to your own body without it.
2. Speaking of your body, it will remain in a coma-like state when your spirit leave, so be mindful of its state and location when using this feature.
3. NFC (near-field communication) is the only signal supported by this feature as this moment. As such, the target body you choose can only be up to 1 meter away from you when use this feature.
4. Beware of any interfering signals (i.e. electrical circuits, microwaves) as it may disrupt signal transmission, which can result in you entering an unintended target.
Participation in our alpha test is certainly not mandatory, but we hope that you will strongly consider testing this feature as it will help us improve your experience as we post updates over time. As a side note, you will be our first tester as the billionth user if you do choose to participate, and your feedback will be important in shaping future updates. We ask that you will provide feedback occasionally to help us in our updates. Because you are the only user with this feature, we strongly implore you to not disclose this feature to your peers, friends, etc. We will announce this feature publicly when this feature is finished alpha testing.
We have done rigorous testing in our laboratory to minimize all safety risks. Once again, we hope that you will test and enjoy this feature. If you have any questions, feel free to type them here in this chat room.
After reading what seems to be foreign text to Steven, he wanted to show this to one of his colleagues. However, the developer did ask him to keep it secret. Also, Steven was in the mood to try new things. (After all, this is what led him to buy the smartphone in the first place.) It might give him a leg up in the future when talking to his colleagues.
After reading the message several more times, Steven began to understand this new feature. "So this is essentially like possession of a body. Well, it could help me build relationships with my colleagues, which seemed to be difficult before this for me," Steven thought.
He browsed through all of his contacts on Whosapp to determine who could be a good test target, minding that the target had to be close by. (Luckily, Becca seemed to have added every worker at Wilkos and even included some from Beautylicious and Lash Academy for good measure.) Steven, of course, questioned why so many contacts, but he certainly wasn't complaining, especially with this exclusive feature in hand.
As Steven was perusing through his list, he heard Nathan making his way to the break room. Nathan was one of the new temporary hires at Wilko, so he wasn't familiar with everyone yet. Also, he had such an athletic body, which was a vast improvement from Steven's own body. These two qualities made Nathan the ideal guinea pig.
It was mid-afternoon, so Nathan was probably looking for a break. As Nathan was about to enter, Steven quickly found Nathan's contact on Whosapp and clicked the "S" button. Steven immediately felt himself dissolving as his view faded black. He heard a brief buzzing sound before regaining his senses. As his view came into focus, he saw that he was facing the break room now with a much higher viewpoint. Looking to his right, Steven saw his own slumped body with the smartphone held at hand. As if by instinct, Steven quickly carried his own limp body and smartphone into the nearby men's room. Gently placing the body in a stall, Steven was surprised that the deed was relatively effortless. Taking his own smartphone in his current hand, Steven took a glance at the mirror. Nathan's tall, athletic body stared back at him. Steven briefly admired his younger and more toned body.
Of course, Steven quickly stopped as he was worried if someone were to catch him in this state. Steven pondered his next step. Nathan's body felt somewhat exhausted, potentially from the work today, so it would be best to leave Nathan for now. With this newfound feature, he had so many possibilities, from learning someone's personal life to manipulating relationships. But Steven started with a simple question: should he search for a male or female body? A male body would certainly be a smoother transition, but a female body would provide a glimpse on the other side of life. A third option was to return to his own body, as Steven was worried about leaving his limp body unsupervised.
