Chapter #5

Magnus Fischer

    by: Unknown
“…So, what do you think?”

Magnus looked on expectantly as he sat across from Dr Lockheed’s desk. He pushed his glasses back onto the bridge of his nose. They’d slipped off before due to the sheer volume of perspiration seeping out of his facial pores. Still, he beamed excitedly, his trembling fingers and legs accompanied by an eager demeanour. No wonder he was so exuberant today; it wasn’t everyday that one was able to meet their idol- Mr Lockheed being a man that Magnus had looked on as a sort of Messiah for scientific advancement- and discuss their latest and greatest scientific achievement.

Lockheed, however, seems less than excited to see the geneticists newest creation. He looked at the bean-shaped…well, bean, held within his palm with puzzlement. It didn’t seem much really, apart from its odd translucent like colour and strange hourglass-like symbol on its body.

“What…What the hell is it?”

“Well, sir, that is a genetically modified jellybean that will revolutionise the-“

“Let me stop you there Magnus. A…jellybean? I call on you to provide me a more effective solution to combatting the loss of neural transmission to sufferers of ailments of the mind and you bring me a, what was it again?”

“A jellybean, sir, but that’s not all, far from in fact. I’m truth this is the neural transmission system you requested, albeit in a slender, pocket sized, portable form that will be easier marketed than any fancy gizmo could ever be. See, one of these has the capability to conduct over 50 watts of energy each of electrical signals, meaning they can handle over twice the brain’s functioning pattern.”

Lockheed wasn’t really listening though. He held his head in his hands and shook it ruefully. “Bloody jellybeans,” he repeated to himself.

“…These will allow synapses connection the likes of which are unprecedented! Imagine; two people pop one of these bad boys into their mouths and boom! A whole interconnected pathway between themselves to speak and share memories! Imagine what we could do for people with dementia! Or those who are unable to speak because of physical impairments! The possibilities are endless!”

“…Sharon’s gonna have my head…”

Magnus sighed. “Please sir, I promise that this project has potential. The money you’ve put in will pay off a thousandfold. So far we’v only had a few small hitches with our experiments with mice; after administering the beans to two at the same time, they do seem to begin acting in uncharacteristic ways. To counter this for now I’ve added the timer to the body of the capsule; once ingested, the timer will glow on the organism’s wrist for approximately 24 hours before the beans can be administered again and the subjects returned to normal. Apart that there should be no significant delay in rolling these out to the public markets.”

Magnus turned and ducked into his bag, hoping to pull out the makeshift branding he’d designed for the first few bags already. However, after a period of a few seconds of increasingly hurried rummaging, he realised that the spare bag that he’d prepared had seemingly disappeared into thin air.

“Oh no,” he muttered underneath his breath.

“Oh no?” Lockheed asked.

Meanwhile…
