“Good morning, Hypatia!” Helen beamed with excitement, as her cat climbed up on the breakfast table to try and eat out of Helen’s cereal bowl. Helen Schwartz was 45 years old. She lived alone with her cat. She hadn’t been on a date in years. Most women would dread being in her position. But Helen greeted each day with new excitement and joy.
How? Well, she kept her stress levels low. Despite her size, she kept in shape, mentally and physically with a strong Yoga routine. Her job and lack of children allowed her a great deal of self-care, bubble baths, trips to visit her parents in the Yucatan in the summer.
And, oh right. Bending and breaking the entire staff and student body of Buttercombe’s Academy for Growing Girls to her will, and sending them spiraling further into obesity. That kept her happy. And she was looking forward to doing that today, same as every day.
She poured a pot of tea into her thermos, and headed out, letting her cat lick what it liked out of her breakfast bowl. Her trip through the halls to her office was a joyous one. Even at 250 pounds, Helen was one of the most physically capable members of the faculty. She headed to work with a spring in her step and to move circles around her more sedentary coworkers. Like Marsha Alberway, for example. Helen spied a sliver of the coach’s belly hanging out of her new jersey, and smiled. Or Carrie Porter. She swore that woman looked more like her sister every day. Oh how she missed Cerys Porter’s presence on campus!
And the students! Camela Mencia! How Dr. Schwartz loved conversing with her in Spanish during their meetings. And how she enjoyed how many treats out of her candy bowl Camela would have during those meetings. And how those treats padded out her behind.
Even the new ones! Hunter Black. Helen had such a fondness for the Black Family! All of them, but especially Hunter’s sister. Her letter of recommendation helped ensure Hunter’s acceptance, and she intended to do her best to mold Hunter into her own ideal of a young woman.
Yes, there was endless opportunities, and endless pleasures waiting for her at her desk every morning. When her close-minded, so-called ‘superiors’ weren’t getting in her way. So she sat down to get to work, took a sip of tea, and checked her answering machine with a smile.
