"Hey, what's this?" Mark called, pointing to the wooden flooring.
"What is it?" Deb asked, peering at the spot on the floor and noticing a hatch. "Oh, we have basement? Since when do cabins have basements?"
"Maybe it's for storage or something?" Mark suggested. "Weird though. Shall we take a look?"
Before Deb could answer, Mark pulled the hatch open and climbed down. Deb wasn't exactly keen to go down into a dank, dark basement where she couldn't see, but decided to follow him down anyway. Stepping down a rickety ladder, she missed the last step and dropped the rest of the way. Fortunately, Mark caught her before she fell flat on her face. "Thanks," she said, adjusting her round glasses with a smile.
"No worries," Mark said, gently brushing her arms as she steadied herself.
He moved to flick a light switch on and the basement area lit up, revealing a work bench, chest of drawers and a bookcase. Examining their surroundings, the pair checked out the four corners of the room. Mark batted a spider away from his head awkwardly, apparently not a fan of bugs. Deb blew the dust off a book on the shelf, which was a very old, thick looking tome. She flicked through some of the pages, which were written in a language she couldn't make out. The other books looked to be trashy romance novels, some Harry Potter books and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1994 annual. Quality reading material, obviously.
Mark was looking at an antique mirror, in which he was adjusting his hair. He didn't really see much of value around here, but it had been worth checking it out just so he could catch Debbie when she tripped on the step. She was so cute when she was looking worried. He'd often wondered whether to ask her out, but she never really seemed that into him.
"I think that's everything," Mark shrugged, taking one last look around. "I'm going to hold on to this mirror."
"I'm going to check this book out," Deb said, holding up the ancient looking volume. "I'm interested to see what language it is."
They went back up stairs, closing the hatch behind them. It was getting late at this point, and the journey had tired them out, so they said good night and went off to bed...
