âI did,â The wolf replied confirming that it was indeed capable of talking. Ray noted that the voice was feminine. Strong and powerful, but definitely feminine. âIâd like to apologize about last night, unfortunately I wasnât in my right state of mind and Iâm sure that I mustâve looked like a wild animal from your point of view.â
Rayâs expression changed from awe to annoyance as he recalled the events that led up to that morning, âThat would be putting it mildly to say the least. I thought I was going to die, and as far as I know⌠I still might.â The hybridâs ears flinched and her tail dropped as she displayed what seemed to be⌠regret? Remorse? It was hard to tell with something that wasnât human, but there was definitely enough there to make out that she wasnât happy.
âI truly am sorry⌠But I really couldnât help itâŚâ She then paused as though a thought had struck her, but she seemed hesitant to share it. Ray watched her carefully as she moved towards him once more, âHas your arm healed yet?â She inquired.
Ray looked at her suspiciously before giving his reply, âAs a matter of fact⌠it hasâŚâ
The hybrid nodded, seemingly satisfied with his reply, âGood, it means the process is well underway.â
The human flinched upon hearing her rebuttal, âWhat process?â He demanded, doing his best to keep fear and anger out of his voice.
The wolf smiled apologetically, âItâs a bit of a long and slightly confusing storyâŚâ
Ray stood up and crossed his arms while meeting her purple eyes with an even and deadpan expression, âWell itâs not like I have anything else to do. And I canât just pretend like last night just didnât happen and go about my routine, especially with you standing here in front of me! I mean⌠what are you anyway? A wolf? A tiger? Or both? Because honestly, you look like both, but last time I checked, tiger wolf hybrids werenât even a thing, and even if they were they certainly wouldnât be able to talk!â
The creature chuckled at the humanâs response leading him to assume that she found his confusion somewhat amusing, âActually,â She started, âIâm neither. In fact, Iâm not even from this world.â Ray stared at her trying to piece together what he was hearing. His brow furrowed while his lips quirked into a quizzical expression as he tried to decipher what his newfound acquaintance was trying to tell him. âIâm from a planet called Sarnoaval. I fell to this planet last night and landed in a zoo in a nearby city. It just so happened that I landed between the tiger and wolf exhibits and ended up taking this mixed form you see now.â Rayâs face was totally blank as he tried to comprehend and process what he was hearing. He was talking to an alien that had taken a hybrid form of a tiger and wolf. Words seemed to flee from him as he struggled to find something to say. His conversational partner seemed to sense that he was feeling a bit overwhelmed and gave him a sympathetic smile, âI know it must be difficult for you to grasp,â She admitted, âBut it is necessary for you to understand what Iâm going to tell you next.â
Ray shook his head and ran a hand through his hair, âYeah, thatâs just kind of⌠wow? And maybe a little⌠yeahâŚâ
âWould you like me to continue,â She asked as she tilted her head to the side.
âUm, actually⌠I have a question.â
âI thought you might, ask whatever you like,â She replied.
Ray nodded before asking what had stuck in his mind after her initial explanation, âYou said you fell to earth. How did you even get here? I mean, didnât you have a ship or something? And why did you have to take an alternate form to begin with?â
The Sarnoavan nodded, âBoth fair questions,â She replied, âTo answer the first one, no. I did not come in a ship. I suppose âfellâ isnât the proper word, but it still seems like the most appropriate. I was actually launched from my home world to earth with a sort of matter transporting device. It works kind of like a slingshot. But to survive being literally hurled through space and crashing onto another planet, the device converts the matter into a sort of âshadow jellyâ.â
The human blinked in confusion at the explanation, âIf you have the technology to do all that, why not make it put you back together in the same form that you were in originally?â
âThat would have been safer and strictly speaking, we do devices that are designed to do just that. However, we didnât have access to our standard technology because weâre fugitives,â She explained.
Ray raised an eyebrow, âFugitives? So then, youâre a criminal?â
