Claire saw a tiny toddler no older than two looking back at her in the mirror, wearing her nightshirt like a comically overlarge dress. Claire moved her arms and adjusted her face several times to ensure that the refection was indeed her own. How could this happen? People don’t just don’t randomly turn into toddlers, right?
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, “Mommy, do you want to play? Daddy already left for work, and I’m bored.”
“Chloe,” Claire squeaked.
“Mommy,” Chloe spoke as she opened the door, “I said; do you want to…” the child stopped when she saw the toddler on the floor. Claire was about to speak and explain what was going on as best she could, but suddenly Chloe let out a squeal of delight, “you’re here, you’re here!” Chloe cheered as she took her regressed mother into her arms, “my baby sister is here. My wish came true!”
“Wish, what wish?” Claire tried to say, but it came out as, “wish?”
“The wish I made last night,” Chloe explained, “when mommy and daddy told me I was going to be a big sister, I was so excited, so when I saw a shooting star last night, I made a wish; to get a cute little sister.” Chloe smiled at Claire, “and here you are. It’s not how my friend Betty got her little brother, but that’s okay.”
“Is that what’s going on? Had Chloe’s wish done this? No, of course not. Wishes don’t come true, do they?” Claire shook these thoughts from her head as right now, she had to make sure Chloe knew who she was. “Chloe put me down right now; I’m your mother,” Claire tried to speak, but it came out as, “down, me mommy.”
“Oh,” Chloe responded, “is that why you’re wearing mommy’s pajamas? Were you playing dress-up?”
“No, I am your mother; now put me down!” Claire tried only to say, “me, mommy, down!”
Chloe giggled, “of course you’re mommy, but you shouldn’t take her things without asking; she gets mad at me when I play with her make-up. But, I’ll put you down; you’re all wet anyway.”
“I was sweating,” Claire attempted only to hear, “me sweet.”
“I’ll bet that you are,” Chloe giggled again. “But how come you’re wet? Did you go potty?”
“No, no, no,” That was Claire’s first sentence today to come out as intended.
Chloe laughed, “I’m just teasing. I know why you’re wet; you came from the shooting star!” Chloe explained, “my teacher says that the sun is a star, and since you came from another star, you must be really hot,” Chloe held out her hand, “now let’s go get you ready for the day so mommy and daddy can see what a good big sister I am.”
