The Spirit

by: Sly F Author IconMail Icon
You had said good bye to all of your friends. They wanted to keep camping, and they tried insisting you at least stay one more night since it was already dark out, but you really wanted to sleep in your own bed instead of on the cold ground in a cheap tent.

They'd picked a camping spot very deep in the woods. It was pitch dark and a long hike back to civilization. As you slowly made your way through the trees, you were getting more nervous than you'd care to admit. Everyone in your group had a different scary story to tell around the campfire. The Huntress. The Nurse. The Pig.

But the story you were the most afraid of was The Spirit.

Rin Yamaoka's story was as heartbreaking as it was terrifying. According to your friend, speaking in hushed, dramatic tones over the crackling fire while your marshmallow burned on its stick, Rin had lived in the Kawaga prefecture of Japan. She was a model citizen. Bright, beautiful, and completely devoted to her family. She was a top student at a very prestigious university, ambitious and very diligent. But even while completely exhausted from all of her studies, she still found the time and energy to support her family by working late hours at a restaurant, where she was well liked by both customers and staff.

But then things went wrong.

Her desperate father snapped. Rin came home to find her mother had been slashed to death with an antique Katana that was an old family heirloom. Rin put up a good fight, but slowly and painfully her father managed to hack at her with the Katana until she breathed her last breath as well.

But according to the story, Rin found no peace in death. Her spirit wandered the Earth filled with rage, unleashing her fury on innocent wanderers she encountered with an impossibly sharp Katana.

At the end of the story, everyone had been so engrossed that a squirrel rustling in a bush nearby had caused you all to scream and practically jump out of your skin.

Now you're thinking about the story, shaking like a leaf and telling yourself it's just because of how brisk the night air is. You walk slowly, barely breathing, constantly looking all around you to make sure you're still alone, the woods lit only by the light of the full moon.

A crow caws and then loudly flaps it wings as it flies out of a tree and across your path, causing your heart to beat harder and faster in your chest. As you try to regain your composure you hear another sound, like a sudden, brief whistle of howling wind.

You turn around and in the distance you spot a figure that most definitely wasn't there before.

She's small, slender, and pale in the moonlight, with dark silken hair flaying around her head as if caught in a strong wind, even though the air tonight's perfectly still.

You do nothing but stare, too scared to move. She's standing there still as well.

There's that strange windy whistle sound again, and then she vanishes, reappearing instantly in a straight path from where you first saw her standing. But she's much, much closer now.

You continue staring. Horribly frightened, but also mesmerized and captivated by her. She's definitely beautiful, in a way you can only describe as haunting. Her pale skin grows a bluish gray hue in the moonlight, but it still appears soft and smooth. Her eyes are round and wide, but lack pupils and glow a frightening yellow. They appear to be surrounded by streaks like makeup smeared by crying. She has razor-sharp cheekbones, full dark lips, and perfect teeth that even in her decaying state look pristine and white.

Long bandages, reddish-brown as though stained in blood, are wrapped around only her most private parts, hiding her nudity but showing off an obviously tight and athletic body, with a small but firm chest, tiny waist, flat abdomen, and smooth, slender legs.

Disconcertingly, there are huge gaps in each of her limbs, with the dismembered joints hovering roughly where they would be if they were still attached. Obviously this phenomenon is supernatural, or you're caught in a bad dream.

The Spirit is exactly like your friend described in their spooky story. Deep gashes in her flesh, billowing raven hair, and shards of glass all over her body from when, according to the story, she's gone through a glass partition while fighting for her life.

Even with no pupils, she seems to be staring right at you, cocking her head from side to side like a curious animal, each movement accompanied by the sickening sound of bones loudly cracking.

What you don't comprehend is that this apparition doesn't want to harm you. Actually, Rin finds herself physically attracted to you. And the more you make her pursue you, the more she's going to want you.
