Brad turned around as the door shut behind him. He laughed as Karen went over to the device and fiddled with the controls. He decided to play along, so he made his best monkey sounds as he wondered what this device actually did.
He was examining the panel on the wall when he heard a metallic clank and couldn’t see out of the barricaded window. He was a little nervous as he heard the humming of a machine. Just as he looked up, a bright light shot out from the dome in the ceiling. And that’s when things got really weird.
His body went numb as his vision faded. It was hard to describe the sensation he was feeling, but it wasn’t unpleasant or painful. It was like all the molecules of his body were rearranging themselves into something else. Finally the machine stopped and he opened his eyes as the hatch to the Booth released him.
“What the fuck?!”, he thought as the room’s size more than doubled. He tried to call to Karen, but his mouth wasn’t cooperating. “Eeeeeek, aaaaah oooh ohhh” were the only sounds that came out. He then noticed a furry hand in front of his face. Moments later, he realized it was HIS hand! Closer inspection of his body revealed that he was covered in fur. “And what the hell is this?”, he thought as he grabbed his new tail. “Holy shit! I’m a damn primate! That means that his uncle’s machine was the real deal! He got really excited for a moment, until he remembered that he was the guinea pig and wasn’t sure how well the machine would work to restore his human form. He seemed to still have his wits about him. “Little good that would do me if I had to spend the rest of my life in a zoo. I wonder what species of monkey I am? Or what.... sex!?”, he thought as his hands quickly checked to see if he was still male. “Yep, got it.” He quickly confirmed.
He looked up to see Karen looking down at him with her mouth wide open. She made a comment about it being a prank, but her voice wasn’t very convincing.
“The manual! I hope the answers are in there. His body was a lot more agile than he originally thought as he gracefully climbed up to the machine and grabbed the book. “I don’t have any thumbs?! Damn it! A small, but disappointing setback.”, he thought as he fumbled with the book.
“B...B....Brad?”, questioned Karen.
Brad nodded and pointed to the book. “He was also excited that he could still read and understand language. Having his human intellect was at least some comfort to him.
He was having difficulty turning the pages, so he put down the manual and examined the screen. Toward the end of the list, he read that the duration was set to 24 hours. “Does that mean that I’ll revert to human in 24 hours or I can use the machine in 24 hours to change back?”, he thought as he scratched his head like he normally did when concentrating on a problem.
He noticed his tail once again and was amazed how easily he could control it. He started to get a better look at himself when Karen interrupted his examination.
“Honey, don’t worry. We’ll find a way to turn you back, I promise. For now, Let’s go ahead and examine this operation manual, then we’ll see what kind of food I can feed you.", Karen said as she gave Brad a reassuring hug.
Brad climbed up on the desk with Karen and read over her shoulder.
