It started a joke, nothing more. But it became so much more than that. She found the ritual in a moldering box tucked away in the back corner of the basement of the bookstore where she slaved away for little reward. Half buried amongst the trash, she found the little stained book that would change her life beyond compare. The faded and peeling text on the cracked spine was in some language she couldn’t make heads or tails of. Even looking online provided nothing close to the weird lettering if that was even what it was. Regardless of that, English text filled the inside of the book. Though the text there seemed to shift and crawl across the yellowed pages as she watched, and the odd style made it difficult though not impossible to read.
One constant part in the middle of the pages though, described a ritual. One that was far simpler than she was expecting. She figured it was a gag despite the oddity of the rest of the book. She figured it wouldn’t do anything, but it would be good for a laugh. So that night after work, she rounded up the ingredients and other parts for the ritual and performed it.
Like she expected, nothing happened. She gave a laugh, tossed the book back in a bag to return it the next day and cleaned up before getting to bed.
She knew something happened while she slept, but she couldn’t remember much. She encountered…something. Something sealed away, trapped between dimensions before the universe was even born. Its form was impossible to comprehend, and its “voice”—if it could be called that—crashed over her and almost drowned her in power. One part stuck with her though, the being made a deal with the young woman. She would be free to do as she wished across the whole of the fabric of reality, and in return it would receive a break from the utter monotony and boredom of its existence. It then passed a small glowing orb from its immeasurable bulk and into her. Her body blazed with the incalculable power, for more than a human could ever hope to contain, but she was no longer human, even if she may have looked like it until she decided otherwise.
As the creature vanished back to from whence it came to enjoy the show, she was left alone. Back in her cramped apartment like nothing had changed. She could tell how much had changed though. With nary a thought, she could see the total expanse of the infinite multiverse stretching out around her. Realities upon realities, infinite variations of worlds that were thought to be only fiction in the one she started from. And in all of them, she could see the multitude of beautiful women she had lusted after for so long. They would be hers; she would make sure of that. The power within her grasp would allow her to do so with ease.
She turned her focus to one collection of worlds to start with.
