Chapter #4

Seafood Surprise

    by: Unknown
"Glad to see you out of your cave again, honey," your mom joked as she heard the sound of the creaky floorboards from your bare feet walking down the stairs. Stepping into the dining room she continued speaking without so much as a head turn, focused on moving some clean and dry plates to the cupboards above the sink. "Food's on the table." You were ready to dig into the usual bowl of cereal that she poured out for you, but instead what you saw most certainly did not belong anywhere near that food group.

"Uh...mom? What's this?" you asked, pointing at the chunks of meat currently resting on your plate.

"What, suddenly tired of salmon now?" your mom chuckled. "I don't remember you being so picky about what you ate..."

"I mean...I guess not?" Seafood wasn't something you ate on a regular basis- let alone for lunch. But for all you knew, it was some new Mediterranean diet she was hooked on, and you knew better than to complain about being dragged into it with her. Might as well just put up with it for a week or two, before she gave up on it. Besides, there could be plenty of worse things showing up on your plate.

At least, that's what went through your mind right up until the first bite of salmon.

What the-?! you think while immediately opening your mouth to spit the food back onto the plate. "Mom, is this raw?"

She shrugs in response. "If you want it cooked, you know where the microwave is."

You look at her in disbelief for a moment before getting up, sighing while putting the fish (pre-chewed part included) under 2 minutes of heat. Is this like, a passive-aggressive way to get me to make my own lunch from now on? It wouldn't be like her to do such a thing, but then again, she has been pouring your cereal and making your meals for a long time now. Could've just been straightforward about it, though...

Either way, the rest of your meal goes relatively smoothly; the fish brings a surprisingly positive reaction to your taste buds despite being unseasoned. "Any chance for seconds, mom?"

"You just ate, Alex," she chastises. "No more food until dinner. Well, maybe a treat later, but that's it."

Ooh, is she going out for ice cream? I hope so. You make sure to wash your plate to keep your mother placated, before deciding what to do with the rest of your day...
