After work Matthew Monet stared at the shimmering coin he had found in the old park, its surface glinting in the midday sun. It felt heavy in his pocket, a constant reminder of the strange encounter with the old man who had given it to him. “It’s a game changer,” the man had said, his voice low and gravelly, “but be careful with your wishes.”
He had called his long time female and lesbian friend Alex and after some discussion they set a wager that looser will change gender….And Matthew lost!
After his disastrous wager with Alex, Matthew couldn’t shake the feeling that he had awakened something beyond his control. He now stood in front of the bathroom mirror, admiring — or rather, grappling with — his reflection. The face looking back at him was undeniably female; soft features, long hair falling in gentle waves, and wide, expressive eyes. He had lost his first wager, and as a result, he was now living in a reality he never anticipated.
Alex had been skeptical when he suggested they use the coin to make their friendship more interesting. They had joked about who would lose a wager where the stakes were high and personal. "How about whoever loses has to do an embarrassing dance in front of the entire school?" she laughed. It had seemed harmless until the stakes shifted, and Matthew found himself unwittingly wagering more than he bargained for.
“Okay, this is... weird,” he muttered to his reflection, his voice soft and unfamiliar. He poked at his cheeks, half-expecting them to shift back to their previous state. Nothing changed.
