"Anywhere but here, man. I've had my fill of hospitals." Adrien commented as he and James stopped just in front of the door of their hospital room. The doctor had left a few minutes ago, after they had signed the release papers. Even though he and James were both eager to leave, Adrien was nervous to leave the confines of the room, and he knew his friend felt the same unease. Their room was located in the east wing of the hospital, away from most people. It gave them some much needed privacy, and time, to adjust to sharing Jame's body.
"I'm nervous too dude. But we'll get through this together, just like in elementary school way back when." James smiled.
Adrien smiled back. Since elementary school, they had been inseparable. When they transitioned to middle school and then to high school, he and James had always begged the academic counselors to place them in the same classes. Now, they were literally inseparable, and everything was essentially a team effort. "Like we have a choice, JJ. We're bros for life." He raised his fist between them, and James bumped it in response. As they could no longer shake hands or bro hug, fist bumping had become a way they reassure one another. It was how they affirmed one another. It was also how they forgave one another.
Adjusting to sharing one body had been much harder than either had anticipated. The last few weeks had been challenging, as he and James received intensive physical and occupational therapy. They had to re-learn how to do pretty much everything, even how to go to the bathroom. Thankfully, it was all paid for through the hospital since the procedure had been experimental.
Adrien remembered the first day he woke up, permanently beside his best friend. Even though he knew what the surgery entailed, waking up on a new body was terrifying, and even more so when that body still had its original owner's head too. Adrien and James had both screamed despite hoarse voices. The nurses had to pump some drug through their shared veins to help calm them down. And after the initial shock, things did not get better right away. It was frustrating learning how to just sit up in bed. It took many disjointed, uncoordinated attempts to lift their torso against some pillows for the first time. It was followed by more arguing and yelling as they they learned to do basic skills as a team, as a unit. In spite of the struggling, Adrien felt his friendship deepen with James. While he would not wish sharing a body on anyone, he decided that if the roles had been reversed, he would have done the same for James. As the weeks of the hospital dragged on, their families had come often to visit, even James's girlfriend.
Finally, Adrien pulled the door of their hospital room open. It was an easy walk to the main hallway, which lead to the front office. The parking lot, where James had originally left his car in, was just beyond the front doors. Visitors, patients, and staff stared as they walked by. Most had never seen two men with a single body, and as such, Adrien could not blame them for snaring. Though, it still felt uncomfortable all the same.
Upon crawling into Jame's truck, Adrien let out a sigh of relief. "Alright. Well now, I guess we really do need to decide on where to go." He commented as he put James's key into the ignition. After spending hours in a car simulation, and even more hours on a test car, he felt comfortable his James's and his skill in driving. "Where to?"
