As the leader of Vault 73, when the inevitable problem with the useful life of the water purification chips happened again and the vault started to run with the last spare available, you knew what needed to happen. It was a story that you had already heard from the previous generations, when there was still communication between the vaults and instructions to the overseers, when there was still a plan to resettle humanity once all the damage caused by the Great War disappeared. You knew someone had to leave the vault and find a new chip in the outside world, or else life within would be unsustainable the moment that last chip started to fail.
So you took the decision to do it yourself.
As the overseer of a small but well organized control vault with 108 people, a vault with no major issues among its dwellers and that did have most of their supplies still in order to survive for at least another 40 or so years, you could say you were doing an ok job sustaining the population, while being lucky that seemingly none of the outside elements in the wasteland, if there were any near, were interested in getting near the vault's location. But the truth was you didn't feel like you were actually accomplishing anything.
You were aware of the problems the vault had in the long term, not only with the lack of water purification chips but with other critical supplies that would cause problems in a few decades time, but you were unable to find answers within the safety of the vault. You felt like a pointless leader in your day to day, settling minor disputes instead of making the changes required to extend the sustainability of life in the vault, and that's why when the first major issue appeared, instead of making other vault dweller go outside, you decided to hand over the overseer spot and go out to the wasteland to explore yourself.
You hoped that maybe a fresh pair of eyes in the overseer spot could improve things in the vault the way you weren't able to do so, but as you said farewell to the small community you thought that maybe you were just bored with life and were longing for a change of scenario, any change, even if it involved risking your life in the wasteland. With a protocol in place to return within a year even if there were no findings, the new overseer authorized opening the vault's door and off you went to the unknown, hoping to find what your people needed but also whatever it was your heart kept longing for.
