Chapter #5

A rare side effect from the Prototype antidote.

It was a dark and quiet night in Beika, Japan. The air was cool and crisp with the residue of the late afternoon autumn breeze, the cicadas chirping in melodious harmony. The streets were barren and black as coal, their corners only softened by the harsh glow of the streetlamps. Tonight, all was content, the city was at rest, and not a single creature could be found stirring, not even a little mouse.

Well, that is, except for one Tsuburaya Mitsuhiko, his hands jittering and shaking every which way as he occupied himself with fiddling with the window latch of Professor Agasa's house under the glare of the full moon under the light of his portable flashlight.

He knew he shouldn't be here. He knew that he should be back home, that his parents would be upset if they found that he was out alone in the middle of the night, that his friends would be so disappointed and upset with him if they found out about this. But this was far too important; for as long as he's known Conan-kun and Haibara-san, there had always been something about them that was off, something that made then different from everyone else. He and his friends had long embraced that about them, and loved them for it, but he couldn't help but wonder just what kinds of secrets they were hiding just underneath the surface. As a member of the Detective Boys, it was his duty to get to the bottom of this mystery!

Plus, if Haibara saw just how smart he really was now, then maybe she would...

Before the ensuing blush could begin to overwhelm him, he shook his head like a mangy dog that had been given the longest bath of its life and tried once more to fiddle with the window lock with the lockpicking tools that he somehow managed to acquire with his parents' permission. He's watched Conan-kun at work enough times to know how just important getting to places you weren't supposed to was, so he had been working really hard to learn at least how to open basic locks like...this!

He couldn't help but feel a pinch of mirth and satisfaction as heard the tumbler gently turn, the sensation of the lock opening sending a spark of excitement directly to his brain as Mitsuhiko quickly slipped through the newly opened window. If he was being honest with himself, it was almost scary how quickly he had gotten the hang of lockpicking after trying his hand at a few sets, but he knew that it would come in more than handy in the future!

As he landed arms-first onto the cold ceramic-tiled floor with a dull thud, Mitsuhiko immediately noticed just how different Agasa's house was at night. The room his was in was completely cold, the chill so piercing and harsh that the boy had to rub at his arms as furiously as possible just to get a little bit of comfort. It was also very, very dark; other than bits of a table and some chairs, Mitsuhiko could barely make out much of where exactly he was. The only thing that even begun to fill the air with some warmth was the sound of Agasa's guttural snoring, which he could hear even from downstairs.

As the young boy once more turned on his flashlight and made his way deeper into the belly of the beast, Mitsuhiko could feel all the trepidation and anxiety he had beforehand come rushing back like a flash flood. His nerves at this point were on the very of snapping, becoming nothing more than a collection of broken suspension wires flailing about in the wind, but before he could second guess himself any longer, he continued onwards, slowly creeping along the living room floor as he tried to ignore the hollow fluttery feeling that was forming in his stomach and the goosebumps trying to tear their way out of his skin. There was nothing to feel guilty about. He may have broken into Professor Agasa's house, but they had to understand! It was his duty as a detective to uncover the truth, no matter how impossible or how horrible it may be!

As he continued to slowly trudge through the bleak abode, his flashlight caught onto something that instantly had Mitsuhiko's attention. Right there, on an isolated working desk, laid two small pills placed right besides each other, along with a strange paper of some kind that laid right underneath. Looking at it, the boy couldn't make heads or tails regarding what most of the words on the paper even meant, only that there was something about an "APTX-4869" written in katakana.

Mitsuhiko couldn't help but hesitate as he turned to the tiny pills. He should just leave now. He already was risking far too much just being here, and it just...didn't feel right. But if he did that, then it would only be a matter of time before they realized someone had broken in. And if he left now without anything to show for it, he would never know for sure what was going on, and Haibara still had a chance of finding out it was him anyway!

...well, if he wanted to really find something out right now, there was only one way he could really do that.

Reassuring himself that Haibara-san would never have anything really dangerous lying around and drowning out the inner voices screaming at him just how terrible an idea this was, he...
