1000 years after the sky fell, the Earth has changed very much. Anything left of the old world is just petty imitations. The long exposure of the meteors to the environment has led to much of it being mutated, resulting in almost fantastical monsters coming to existence around impact sites. The same can be said for humans, many of which have mutated into what could be called monsters, such as elves, vampires, and other species.
Magic of course is still prevalent, but has diminished over the millennia. It how requires a life time to learn to harness, but it can still be learned by anyone and is very powerful it is. Areas near impact sites are where magic has remained strongest and as such, the new empires of the new age are centered around these sites.
Humanity has regressed to a medieval state of living, with most people living subsistence life styles and ruled by a class of wealthy nobles and monarchs. And those who don't have expertise in magic have to rely on melee weapons, bows, and the rare black powder weapon.
