The nurse appeared to lead him through to the processing room. A short wait needed until the nanites solution could be properly mixed. His eyes blurred as he group hugged his friends. Jesse was almost a year older than him, and Mark just a few days. It was certain neither of them would face this. He was still surprised by the tears in his eyes.
The nurse folded her arms, staying silent. But her impatience was clear, this was a significant chapter for Andrew. For her it was just another shift, and Andrew wasn't even her only patient for the day.
"Is it okay if I hook up with Susan now?" Andrew asked with an uncertain smile on his face. His attempt at humour uncertain.
"I'll date you.... afterwards." Jesse said attempting the same joke.
Andrew must've looked aghast, as Jesse couldn't meet his eyes. Blushing and staring at the floor, as he muttered a litany of apologies.
The nurse's hand landed on Andrew's shoulder. It was time. The resistance ebbed out of him, his shoulders slumped, and he turned towards the indicated doors.
Susan glared at the other boys, knowing it was just a joke, and simultaneously not. She punched them each in the arm, and nodded a resolute good-bye to Andrew.
Walking through the double doors, they flip flopped shut blocking his friends from sight. His legs felt wobbly and insecure, at least until the nurse asked if he wanted a wheelchair. Tomorrow he could see his friends. The transformation took a lot from the body, and unconsciousness was certain. So the procedure was timed now to coincide with the night, to ensure a long enough time for the nanites to work without pressure, and recovery to drift into a more natural sleep.
Andrew still felt the desire to bolt, as he was showed to his bed. The name plaque on the door and at the foot of the bed, would ensure he received the right dose. However, the needle was already there. Lying there on a tray beneath a sealed cloche. It was then the trembles overtook him. His knees buckling and failing, the nurse there to slow the fall, transition it into a stumble.
She helped him to the bed, allowing him to sit there, as the dizzy spell came and went.
"It's your butterfly sleep." She told him. "Just slip your clothes off and get into bed." She showed him where to put them, and where he'd find her new clothes on waking. "It'll be fine."
