" You may sit up once you feel you are ready to do so. "
The voice seemed to echo in her head and a frown marred her brow as she forced her eyes to open ever so slowly, knowing that they'd be watering due to the harsh light shining down into her face.
The first thing she noticed when her sight adjusted was the smiling nurse standing at her bedside..a pretty and petite blonde with a chest that most women would not want for fear of back pain later in life.
" So, It's done? " She tried her voice and was pleasantly surprised that she wasn't croaking the words like she expected to..after all..she wasn't a young woman anymore.
" Yes Mrs Brown, And I must say that you have chosen an absolutely stunning array of features for your new life." The nurse responded, her lips stretching into an almost impossibly wide smile that showed far too many teeth.
" Well don't just stand there, help me up." Mary snapped, ping ponging back to the waspish way she used to speak to servants and lesser people but it worked..the woman glided forward to take hold of her arm and helped her into a seated position on the narrow surgical table, reminding her that she was in a backless hospital gown and had no underwear on when the cold metal touched her bare rear end.
It took her three attempts to get to her feet because it felt like her legs were made of boiled noodles and to cross the room to get to the full length mirror on the wall seemed to take a life time of walking like a toddler with her hands held out for balance and taking tiny baby steps to make certain she wouldn't fall but it was well worth the effort once she got there with the nurses help.
" Oh my..." The words emerged from her throat as a breathy whisper as she studied the young woman in that mirror . " Is that really me ? "
The reflections lips moved in time to her words so there was no doubt that it was indeed her image.
The woman she was now had a mop of reddish gold curls that bounced down around her shoulders and framed a delicately boned face with a small nose that turned up a bit at the tip, a generous mouth with fuller lips than she'd ever had, high cheekbones and eyes the color of pale amethysts set below perfectly arched brows.
Eagerly Mary Brown reached up to untie the gown and she let the hideous thing slip down to pool around her ankles so she could survey the rest of this new her..from the pale globes of her improved chest to the flat abdomen and pinched in waist to the rounded hips and long shapely gams..then she twisted her head to peer at what she could see of her much smaller, tighter rump .
" Would you like to get dressed Mrs Brown?" The nurse questioned at last, drawing her attention to the clothes now laid out neatly on the table."Your family is in the waiting room and they're eager to see you."
Of course they were..greedy lot of them were probably hoping that she'd not wake up that way they could do what they wanted with her money and such.
Speaking of waking up...
" Did Ian...is he okay? " She asked, reaching for the tiniest scrap of lace she'd ever seen and scowling down at it before she figured out that it was a pair of underwear.
The nurse turned to face her and held out what she assumed was a top.
" I'm so sorry to inform you that Mr Ian Brown did not make it through the process--"
Mary knew that she should feel something other than relief but for the life of her she couldn't remember why..all she could recall were the countless times she'd been hit and choked by the man she'd married, although he always made sure never to bruise her where others might notice it and question it.
She finished dressing while chewing on her mental images and memories and within ten minutes of waking up she was being ushered to a room where her family sat or stood while waiting on the big unveiling.
"I can't believe she'd do this..It's not right..that money should be ours now." The first words she heard when she entered the room were echoed by a half dozen other people.
"It's not natural, I mean I know she's our mother but by rights she should--"
" I should what, Karona? " She demanded of her eldest daughter." Should I have died like your father so you could all fight over the empire I created and drag the Brown name through the mud? "
Now that she had their attention Marys gaze swept the room, taking in each face and noticing that in addition to the three grandchildren she had known existed before her 'death' there were a half dozen younger children gathered in the room born after her cyro experience..yet two of her childrens spouses were absent...fifteen people in total had been hoping for her to be laying on that slab of metal as nothing but a glob of dead grey matter.
